Detecting Mild Phonotrauma in Daily Life

The Laryngoscope, 2023
ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to gain quantitative insights into the role of daily voice use associated with mild phonotrauma via the Daily Phonotrauma Index (DPI), a measure derived from neck‐surface acceleration magnitude (NSAM) and difference between the first two harmonic magnitudes (H1 − H2).MethodsAn ambulatory voice monitor recorded ...

Life Detection-Past and Present

2008
In this chapter we go beyond the search for geoindicators and biosignatures that might point to the presence of life, with the specific aim of detecting and confirming the presence of life. First, we review the results and interpretations of the Viking mission—the only life detection experiment ever conducted on another planetary body to date.

On Methods of Detection of Extraterrestrial Life

1976
New methods have been developed for detecting microbial growth from the microflora of desert soils. The first is a polarimetric method in which the fall in optical activity due to assimilation of D-glucose is followed. Detectable changes with desert soils were seen in a few hours, and the method can be employed with small amounts of material.

Extraterrestrial Life Detection

Applied Optics, 1969
A fundamental objective of the NASA Planetary Exploration Program is to attempt to cast light on the origin of the planets and the solar system. An integral part of the origin of the planets is the origin of life. In other words, the origin of life seems to be a natural and inevitable consequence of physical and chemical processes occurring during the ...

Imaging and Life Detection

BioScience, 1973
Biologists use imaging extensively for recording and documenting experimental results. It was not surprising, therefore, that the recent opportunities to search for extraterrestrial life resulted in discussions on the use of imaging and the instrument development required for this purpose.

Life's Origin as a Detective as a Detective Story

Chemical & Engineering News Archive, 1986
"There should be no combination of events for which the wit of man cannot conceive an explanation. Simply as mental exercise, without any assertion that it is true, let me indicate a possible line of thought. It is, I admit, mere imagination; but how often is imagination the mother of truth."—Sherlock Holmes in Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Valley of Fear"

Detection of Habitable Planets and the Search for Life

2013
One of the main scientific drivers for extrasolar planet research is the search for terrestrial planets in the habitable zone (HZ) and subsequently the detection of biosignatures indicating the presence of life. This goal is of fundamental importance to answer the question whether the Solar System is the only place in our universe that developed life ...

Life expectancy and the value of early detection

Journal of Health Economics, 2005
This paper presents a model of the benefits and costs of early detection of asymptomatic disease as they vary by age. The benefits of early detection tend toward zero as the risk of death from competing causes increases. Costs per detected case also decline with age, assuming that disease incidence rises with age, but are always strictly positive.
