A force platform was used to study the effect of the following variables on lifting: distance of the load from the heel (16, 18, or 20 in.), weight of the load (11, 22, or 33 lbs.), and angle of turn (0, 45, or 90°). Five male college students, between the 40th and 60th percentile in height, lifted eight times at each condition. The mean peak force was

LIFTING FORCES ASSOCIATED WITH CONTACT LENSES
Optometry and Vision Science, 1972ABSTRACT A mathematical model, predicting the lifting forces required to dislodge an “on K” (or near “on K”) fitted contact lens from the corneal surface, was tested in the laboratory. While the greatest force increases occurred with the addition of an initial 0.2 mm aperture.

Pulling force in lateral lifting and lowering
Ergonomics, 1998This work investigated maximal voluntary lateral hand pulling force in 18 healthy, habitually active men. Measurements were made in standing at different static angles of lateral trunk flexion, as well as at different constant lifting and lowering velocities.

On the relevance of the lift force in bubbly turbulence
Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2003Microbubble-laden homogeneous and isotropic turbulent flow is investigated by using direct numerical simulation of the three-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations and computing the bubble trajectories with Lagrangian tracking. The bubble motion is calculated by taking into account the effect of fluid acceleration plus added mass, drag, gravity, and in ...

Controlling the Ground Reaction Force during Lifting
Journal of Motor Behavior, 1995The control of the ground reaction force vector relative to the center of gravity (CoG) was examined while subjects performed a back-lifting task. Six male subjects (aged 24.0 +/- 2.5 years) repeatedly lifted a barbell. A biomechanical analysis that used a linked segment model revealed that the summed rotations of body segments during lifting yielded a

On a delta wing, the separation vorticies can be stationary due to the balance of the vorticity surface flux and the axial convection along the swept leading edge. These stationary vortices keep the wing from losing lift. A highly swept delta wing reaches the maximum lift at an angle of attack of about 40°, which is more than twice as high as that of a

Lift force in bubbly suspensions
Chemical Engineering Science, 2002Closure relations are presented for the lift coefficient for ordered arrays of 2-D and 3-D bubbles at various bubble volume fractions. These were determined via lattice Boltzmann simulations of bubble rise in periodic boxes, where the bubbles were also subjected to shear.

Drag, lift, and virtual mass forces
2007The pressure distribution around a particle moving in a continuum is nonuniform. Integrating the pressure distribution over the surface one obtains a resulting force that is different from zero. As shown in Vol. I, Chapter 6.2, the different spatial components of the integral correspond to different forces: drag, lift and virtual mass forces.
