The Influence of Oceanic Turbulence on Fiber-Coupling Efficiency of Multi-Gaussian Shell-Mode Beams for Underwater Optical Communications

open access: yesPhotonics
This study theoretically investigates the coupling efficiency of multi-Gaussian Shell-mode (MGSM) beams in ocean turbulence. The expression for the fiber-coupling efficiency of the MGSM beams propagating through oceanic turbulent media is derived using ...

Intrinsic, multiplexable sensors for electric field strength using structural slow light in phase-shifted fibre Bragg gratings [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In this paper we demonstrate through simulation the potential for phase-shifted fibre Bragg gratings incorporating structural slow light to enable intrinsic reflection-mode point sensors for electric field or voltage.

Shannon Entropy of Laguerre-Gaussian Correlated Schell-Model Beams in Underwater Turbulence

open access: yesPhotonics
This study examines the evolution of Shannon entropy, a key measure of uncertainty and disorder, in a Laguerre-Gaussian correlated Schell-model (LGcSM) beam under ocean turbulence.

MCNMF-Unet: a mixture Conv-MLP network with multi-scale features fusion Unet for medical image segmentation [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ Computer Science
Recently, the medical image segmentation scheme combining Vision Transformer (ViT) and multilayer perceptron (MLP) has been widely used. However, one of its disadvantages is that the feature fusion ability of different levels is weak and lacks flexible ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.
