Paramagnetic Rim Lesions Are Associated With Trans‐Synaptic Degeneration of the Visual Pathway in Multiple Sclerosis

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives Retrograde trans‐synaptic degeneration (rTSD) from posterior visual pathway lesions in multiple sclerosis (MS) is characterized by hemi‐macular ganglion cell‐inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thinning and contralateral visual field loss.

A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

Designing for Quality in Lighting

Transactions of the Illuminating Engineering Society, 1967
Early in 1964 the Society's Technical Committee appointed a panel on 'Quality in Lighting' to investigate those elements in lighting which contribute to the visual quality of an interior. The early work of the panel was linked with the appraisal work being carried out at that time by the C.I.E. Committee E-3.1.1.3 (Agreeable Luminous Environment). This

The quality of light sources

Coloration Technology, 2011
This paper describes physical measures for quantifying the quality of light sources and their characteristics. Typical light sources, including incandescent lamps, fluorescent lamps and light emitting diodes, are first introduced and their performance is compared.
