Volcanic lightning: exploring the correlation between volcanic eruption, lightning and transient luminous events from 2009 to 2022

open access: yesTerrestrial, Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences
Volcanic activity represents one of the most widespread and destructive natural phenomena on Earth. Previous studies and media reports have indicated that intense volcanic eruptions are frequently accompanied by volcanic lightning. However, understanding

Lightning flash properties derived from lightning mapping array data [PDF]

open access: yes
in this paper size and duration of lightning flashes are examined. Data from the Ebro Valley Laboratory Lightning Mapping Array is used as reference. Additional data from the VLF/LF LINET network and meteorological radar is included.

Impact of fragmented urbanization on observed precipitation

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This study investigates the impact of fragmented urban landscapes on downwind precipitation by applying an innovative observation‐centered approach to an extensive rain gauge network in Belgium. The approach classifies the observations based on the upwind urban land cover fraction, and compares precipitation indices between rural‐ and urban‐labeled ...

LMA observations of upward lightning flashes at the Säntis Tower initiated by nearby lightning activity [PDF]

open access: yes
We present in this paper lightning current measurements, LMA (Lightning Mapping Array) data and fast antenna electric fields associated with upward flashes observed at the Säntis Tower during summer of 2017.

Sentipensar [Feel‐Thinking] Cultivates Collective Scientific Sensemaking and Worldbuilding Within and Beyond Ecological Despair

open access: yesScience Education, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Educating youth about environmental and climate justice is crucial in realizing a sustainable and flourishing future. Yet this can be challenging given the intense eco‐emotions youth experience and express while learning about these consequential realities and their implications.

Central Bank Digital Currencies, Financial Inclusion, and Privacy: A Normative Perspective

open access: yesSouthern Economic Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) are a digital form of a nation's money, issued by its central bank. As opposed to other forms of digital money, such as electronic bank balances or cryptocurrencies, they are centrally managed legal tender.

An Analysis of Lightning Activity in the Säntis Region through the Big Hiatus in Global Warming [PDF]

open access: yes
The response of local lightning to local surface temperature is examined near the Säntis mountain (2502 m ASL) in the eastern Swiss Alps during the first of the two hiatuses in global warming covering the time periods 1940-1972 and 1998-2014.

Bath Vibration During Open Eye Formation in a Physical Model of a Steelmaking Ladle

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
Using a physical model, this study shows that vibration measurements reliably predict open eye size in steelmaking ladles, offering a practical alternative to visual monitoring. Vessel vibrations stabilize faster than the open eye, except at high frequencies near the bottom.
