Canadian contributions to environmetrics
Abstract This article focuses on the importance of collaboration in statistics by Canadian researchers and highlights the contributions that Canadian statisticians have made to many research areas in environmetrics. We provide a discussion about different vehicles that have been developed for collaboration by Canadians in the environmetrics context as ...

Corrosion prediction of galvanized steel electrode in soil using deep learning‐based model
We proposed a deep learning method to numerically predict the corrosion rate of a galvanized carbon steel grounding electrode in this paper. The long‐short term memory method is selected as the modeling algorithm, and also chosen as the hidden layer for the recurrent neural network, while the soil environmental parameters are used as input features ...

Predicting post‐wildfire overland flow using remotely sensed indicators of forest productivity
Relations between runoff coefficient and landscape metrics. (a) linear regression for inland plots only, (b) no regression determined for the data, (c‐f) exponential decay function fitted to the data (C = ae(b×x)). Triangles are the mean value for C, the line is the median, the bar show the range between the 25th and 75th percentiles, whiskers are the ...

Tracking canopy gaps in mangroves remotely using deep learning
Canopy gaps greatly contribute to mangrove forest turnover and rejuvenation. While gap monitoring is usually performed by field and aerial surveys, we propose a novel method based on deep learning to achieve this automatically from very‐high‐resolution satellite imagery.

Alternative photothermal/electrothermal hierarchical membrane for hypersaline water treatment
The structure of MDEM is constructed by vertically aligned micro/nano channels, and photo/electrothermal carbolong complexes (PCCs and ECCs). It can alternatively utilize electrical or light energy to generate heat, and the micro/nano channels within the membrane provide abundant channels for vapor escape, enhancing the desalination capacity. PCCs with

Defining attention from an auditory perspective
In settings with multiple sources, attention acts to mediate what object (estimate of an external, physical source) gets processed in detail. Attention depends on bottom‐up salience of the competing sources, top‐down volitional focus of the observer, and object‐based perceptual organization of the sensory inputs both over time and across different ...

Lightning detection in planetary atmospheres [PDF]
Lightning in planetary atmospheres is now a well-established concept. Here we discuss the available detection techniques for, and observations of, planetary lightning by spacecraft, planetary landers and, increasingly, sophisticated terrestrial radio telescopes.

Abstract As the height of wind turbine increases, the lightning strike accident has become a non‐negligible issue. In this paper, the lightning attachment characteristic of a 2‐MW wind turbine generator (WTG) is investigated using a model with a reduced scale of 100.

Lightning on exoplanets and brown dwarfs: Modelling and detection of lightning signatures throughout the electromagnetic spectrum [PDF]
Lightning is an important electrical phenomenon, known to exist in several Solar System planets. It carries information on convection and cloud formation, and may be important for pre-biotic chemistry. Exoplanets and brown dwarfs have been shown to host environments appropriate for the initiation of lightning discharges.
