Development of a small scale standard lightning impulse current generator
2011 5th International Power Engineering and Optimization Conference, 2011This paper presents the design and development of an impulse current generator that can produce impulse current waveform of 8/20 µs. The testing of lightning protection device such as surge arrester is very important to determine this device can be operates in normal condition.

Conductive Fabric Potential Rise due to Lightning Impulse Currents
2019 International Symposium on Lightning Protection (XV SIPDA), 2019In this laboratory experimental research work, the potential rise of conductive fabrics due to lightning impulse currents is investigated. The potential rise is obtained by measuring the voltage drop across the following representative human body lying face-up position contact points: head-to-heel, head-to-coccyx or head-to-scapula. With the conductive

Model comparison of voltage-current relation for ionized soils produced by lightning impulse current
2016 IEEE 36th Central American and Panama Convention (CONCAPAN XXXVI), 2016A physical model of voltage-current relation describes mathematically the non-linear behavior of the soil when it is ionized by the effect of currents flowing through the grounding system. For engineering applications, it is important to understand the non-linear effect of the voltage-current relation in the soil under the influence of ionization.

Analysis of circuit breaker failures from lightning impulse current
2016 33rd International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP), 2016Facilities such as base stations that are equipped with towers are frequently damaged by direct lightning strikes. A major type of such damage is the failure of low-voltage circuit breakers. There has been almost no consideration of the mode and mechanism of circuit breaker failure.

Rise times of impulsive high-current processes in cloud-to-ground lightning
IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, 2000Measurements are presented of electric-field derivative (dE/dt) waveforms that were radiated by first and subsequent return strokes, stepped, and dart-stepped-leader steps just before return strokes and "characteristic pulses" in normal (negative) cloud-to-ground lightning under conditions of minimal distortion due to ground-wave propagation.

Investigating the effects of single impulse current (SIC) and multiwaveform multipulse currents (MWMPCs) on metal contributes to the body of knowledge on lightning damage characteristics and mechanisms. This information is the basis for lightning protection of metal-made structures such as oil tanks, wires, and aircraft.

Electret transducer for measuring impulse voltages and currents-application in lightning detection
Conference Record of the 1990 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting, 2002Impulse current produced by lightning in transmission and distribution lines is studied. A new method of detection of impulse currents is proposed, using electrets as elements of transduction. An impulse voltage, derived from the impulse current, is applied between two electrodes separated by a dielectric (Teflon FEP) with an air gap, producing a ...

There was a lightning strike on a tile that depicted the shape of a mythical fish with a lion-like head on the top of the castle tower of Inuyama Castle, a National Treasure (Aichi Prefecture), damaging a portion of the tail and fins of the fish, and scattering broken pieces of the tile.

Evaluation and Performance of Grounding Grids Buried in Soil Under Impulse lightning Current
020 1st International Conference on Communications, Control Systems and Signal Processing (CCSSP), 2020This paper is devoted to analyses the transient behaviour of simple grounding grids under impulse lightning current. The Transmission Line Method (TLM) involving mutual coupling between conductors has been used. The transient behaviour of grounding grids buried in homogeneous and in heterogeneous soil has been evaluated into a complete time domain ...

Abstract To understand the destruction of rocks and changes to landforms by lightning strikes, laboratory experiments of lightning strikes were performed using three kinds of rock samples as targets. Artificial lightning with known electric current was simulated by an impulse high-current generator in the laboratory.
