Artificial initiation of lightning discharges
Journal of Geophysical Research, 1961Investigations of atmospheric electricity would be considerably aided if one could cause lightning to strike from a storm at will. Were this possible, apparatus could be set up to observe and measure the discharge and determine what effects it produces. It might be supposed that if a balloon or kite were flown on a wire near a storm, the probability

Mechanism of lightning attraction and problem of lightning initiation by laser
Proceedings of SPIE, 2000The paper deals with some basic lightning properties and processes causing its ability of attraction to the high terrestrial structures. Condition of the vital upward leader and counterleader inception is formulated. Mechanism of the long-distance leader interaction is cleared out.

Correlation of Radio and Gamma Emissions in Lightning Initiation
Physical Review Letters, 2013The results of simultaneous radio and gamma emission measurements during thunderstorms are presented. A gamma detector situated at the height 3840 m and two radio detectors of Tien-Shan Mountain Scientific Station (altitude 3340 m) registered intensive gamma flashes and radio pulses during the time of lightning initiation.

Abstract In this paper, the key finding is that all the examined first classic Initial Breakdown (IB) pulses in tropical flashes within the reversal distance were found to be initiated by a clearly detectable Initial E-field Change or IEC (45 –CG, 32 normal IC, and 3 IC initiated by +NBE). The durations of IECs for both –CG and IC flashes in tropical

Lightning Initiation and Propagation
2009Abstract : The University of Florida (UF) and Florida Institute of Technology (FIT) have completed a one-year, exploratory (seedling) program (March 25, 2008 to August 22, 2009, DARPA Grant HR-OO1-08-1-088) that has examined various aspects of lightning initiation and propagation including the role of X-rays, gamma rays, and cosmic rays in the ...

Lightning initiation on aircraft in thunderstorms
26th Aerospace Sciences Meeting, 1988The physical model of the initiation of lightning flashes by aircraft in thunderstorms is presented. The model is based on the 'bi-directional uncharged leader' concept by Kasemir, and is verified with airborne data from lightning strikes to an instrumented airplane (NASA F-106B and FAA CV-580).

Tower initiated lightning discharges
2014Tall objects (higher than 100 m or so) located on flat terrain and objects of moderate height (some tens of meters) located on mountain tops experience primarily upward lightning discharges initiated by upward-propagating leaders. Upward (object-initiated) lightning discharges always involve an initial stage that may or may not be followed by downward ...

Initiation of cloud-to-ground lightning strokes
Journal of Geophysical Research, 1970Using a computer and postulating highly idealized thundercloud conditions, we have modeled the interaction between a population of raindrops and a region of high electric field. Under favorable circumstances, the interaction produced a downward-moving wave of potential gradient that intensified the preexisting field without apparent limit.

The initial streamer of intracloud lightning flashes
Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 1985The initial development of four vertical intracloud lightning flashes has been studied using time‐resolved measurements of the electric field change from 7–8 ground locations at Kennedy Space Center, Florida. The initial field changes of the flashes were analyzed with a unidirectional piecewise‐linear streamer model in an attempt to determine the ...

Continuing current in tower-initiated lightning
2010 30th International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP), 2010We investigate 172 upward-initiated negative lightning flashes containing at least one leader-return stroke sequence observed to the Gaisberg Tower (GBT) in Austria from 2000 to 2009. A geometric mean value of 8.75 kA of the return stroke peak current is determined, followed by a continuing current of 1.48 ms with a charge transfer of 0.786 C.
