Improvements to the BOLT lightning location system

2016 33rd International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP), 2016
The Broadband Observational network for Lightning and Thunderstorms (BOLT) is a network of low frequency electric field antennas which is capable of mapping lightning flashes in 3D. We are currently investigating improvements to both the hardware design of the BOLT antennas, and to the algorithm used to determine each lightning source location.

Lightning strike location for overhead lines

IEE Half Day Colloquium on Operational Monitoring of Distribution and Transmission Systems, 1997
The author has developed a lightning strike location system which uses radio direction finding techniques to locate lightning strikes as they occur on overhead power lines. The system has been operated as a commercial service since 1989, providing both online information and historical information on lightning activity in the UK and Ireland.

Lightning occurrence data observed with lightning location systems in Japan: 1992-1995

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 1998
Cloud-to-ground lightning occurrence for years 1992-1995 has been analyzed using the data obtained with nine different lightning location systems in Japan. A total of more than 2 million lightning strokes are observed for the four years and the number of annual lightning strokes is closely related to the weather conditions in summer.

Electromagnetic Measurement of and Location of Lightning

Electromagnetics, 1987
ABSTRACT This paper summarizes some techniques developed for electromagnetic measurements of lightning electromagnetic fields at Langmuir Laboratory. These included measurement of transient electric and magnetic fields at the ground surface, use of these fields to estimate location of the lightning and properties of the source, and use of time of ...

Detection and Location of Intracloud Lightning Discharges

1991
Since 1978, the ONERA is involved in basic studies related to the lightning/aircraft interaction problems. One of the first aspect of this research concerns the understanding of the lightning discharge properties and especially the mechanisms associated with the discharges which occurs in altitude.
