Polarization vision and the physiological basis for trichromatic vision in Philaenus spumarius: Understanding host‐seeking behaviour in insect vectors for Xylella fastidiosa control

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Biology, EarlyView.
We investigated the role of vision in host‐seeking behaviour by Philaenus spumarius, the main European vector of Xylella fastidiosa, through an integrated anatomical, optical, physiological, and behavioural study. Our data highlight that the spittlebug uses visual cues, including polarized light, which may aid in detecting the polarized reflections ...

The Issue of Pre‐Islamic Arabic Christian Poetry Revisited

open access: yesArabian Archaeology and Epigraphy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Is only very little Arabic Christian poetry extant from pre‐Islamic times? While distancing myself from Louis Cheikho's (1859–1927) view that almost all pre‐Islamic poets were Christians, I contend in this article that some of them indeed were.

Market regulation and productivity: The case of the Canadian Wheat Board

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract Changes to regulatory environments influence firm‐level incentives, which can move the productivity frontier or reposition firms within an existing frontier. Estimating causal effects of policy changes requires a credible counterfactual for productivity in the absence of policy change.

Lightning Imaging with LOFAR

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2017
We show that LOFAR can be used as a lightning mapping array with a resolution that is orders of magnitude better than existing arrays. In addition the polarization of the radiation can be used to track the direction of the stepping discharges.

Decentralized propaganda in the era of digital media: The massive presence of the Chinese state on Douyin

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Political Science, EarlyView.
Abstract The rise of social media in the digital era poses unprecedented challenges to authoritarian regimes that aim to influence public attitudes and behaviors. To address these challenges, we argue that authoritarian regimes have adopted a decentralized approach to produce and disseminate propaganda on social media.

Automated analysis and statistics of lightning leader speed, local flash rates and electric charge structure in thunderstorms [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
We introduce new methods for the analysis of complex three-dimensional lightning data produced by Lightning Mapping Arrays and illustrate them by cases of a mid-latitude severe weather producing thunderstorm and a tropical thunderstorm in Colombia. The

Wildfires and Atopic Diseases: A Review

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Wildfire smoke is a major environmental health threat that has increased in frequency and severity in recent years. A hazardous component of wildfire smoke is particulate matter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM2.5). There is evidence to suggest that exposure to wildfire PM2.5 may increase the risk of developing or exacerbating atopic diseases, such as asthma ...

Improving prediction of short-duration heavy rainfall in Guangxi, China during the pre-summer rainy season based on Fengyun-4A lightning frequency and a machine learning algorithm

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science
IntroductionThis study investigated the relationships between short-duration heavy rainfall (SDHR) events and lightning activity over Guangxi, China, during the pre-summer rainy season from 2019 to 2023.MethodsThe analysis was conducted using the ...
