Axial muscle‐fibre orientations in larval zebrafish

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, Volume 246, Issue 4, Page 517-533, April 2025.
In 4 days post‐fertilization zebrafish larvae, the fast axial muscle fibres follow helical trajectories that taper towards the tail. Adjacent muscle fibres form substantial angles relative to each other to accommodate this pattern. Using a novel semi‐automatic method, we quantified 3D fibre angles over the whole muscle volume.

Rapid postfire color shift in a Mediterranean lizard

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, EarlyView.
We quantified dorsal luminosity and color composition of Psammodromus algirus in burned and adjacent unburned habitats at different times since fire. Lizards inhabiting recently burned areas displayed lighter dorsal coloration, particularly during the early stages of postfire succession, with the effect being more pronounced in larger individuals ...

Glucuronoyl Esterase of Pathogenic Phanerochaete carnosa Induces Immune Responses in Aspen Independently of Its Enzymatic Activity

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Microbial enzymes expressed in plants add new functionalities but occasionally trigger undesirable immune responses. Phanerochaete carnosa glucuronoyl esterase (PcGCE) hydrolyses the bond between lignin and 4‐O‐methyl‐α‐D‐glucuronic acid substituent of glucuronoxylan.

A High‐Throughput Phenotyping Pipeline for Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) Panicles Using Image Analysis With Convolutional Neural Networks

open access: yesPlant Breeding, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Quinoa is a grain crop with excellent nutritional properties that has attracted global attention for its potential contribution to future food security in a changing climate. Despite its long history of cultivation, quinoa has been improved little by modern breeding and is a niche crop outside its native cultivation area.

Oceanic Storm Characteristics Off the Kennedy Space Center Coast [PDF]

open access: yes
Natural cloud-to-ground lightning may behave differently depending on the characteristics of the attachment mediums, including the peak current (inferred from radiation fields) and the number of ground strike locations per flash.

Laws and Reasons Why

open access: yesAnalytic Philosophy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Laws play some role in explanations: at the very least, they somehow connect what is explained, or the explanandum, to what explains, or the explanans. Thus, thermodynamical laws connect the match's being struck and its lightning, so that the former causes the latter; and laws about set formation connect Socrates' existence with {Socrates}'s ...

Use of High-resolution WRF Simulations to Forecast Lightning Threat [PDF]

open access: yes
Recent observational studies have confirmed the existence of a robust statistical relationship between lightning flash rates and the amount of large precipitating ice hydrometeors in storms.

“I had to open my eyes”—A narrative approach to studying the process of adult belief change

open access: yesPolitical Psychology, EarlyView.
Abstract Why do people, socialized and sedimented in their political beliefs, change their convictions in adulthood? Belief change has a long history of research in the social sciences. Yet, in quantitative research, belief change is studied largely through cognitive and behavioral lenses, that, however valuable, struggle to capture how people ...

Strategic Use of Ad Hoc Commissions for Blame Avoidance: Evidence From Chile

3G Internet Diffusion and Secondary Education Attainment: Evidence of Opportunity Cost in Vietnam

open access: yesReview of Development Economics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Mobile internet diffusion has led to significant societal and economic transformations since its early diffusion, especially in the Global South. This has implied changes in human capital formation, particularly through education, and has reshaped the trade‐off between education and employment, especially among the younger population.
