Lightning flash properties derived from Lightning Mapping Array data [PDF]

open access: yes2014 International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP), 2014
in this paper size and duration of lightning flashes are examined. Data from the Ebro Valley Laboratory Lightning Mapping Array is used as reference. Additional data from the VLF/LF LINET network and meteorological radar is included. In order to simplify the complex geometry of a lightning flash, each flash is described by a confidence ellipse fitting ...

Mapping lightning processes using fuzzy inference system [PDF]

open access: yes2002 IEEE World Congress on Computational Intelligence. 2002 IEEE International Conference on Fuzzy Systems. FUZZ-IEEE'02. Proceedings (Cat. No.02CH37291), 2003
This paper describes a novel approach for mapping lightning processes using fuzzy logic. The core regarding lightning process is to identify and to model those uncertain information on mathematical principles. In fact, the lightning process involves several nonlinear features that our current mathematical tools would not be able to model.

Spatio-temporal dimension of lightning flashes based on three-dimensional Lightning Mapping Array [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Research, 2017
3D mapping system like the LMA - Lightning Mapping Array - are a leap forward in lightning observation. LMA measurements has lead to an improvement on the analysis of the fine structure of lightning, allowing to characterize the duration and maximum ...

A Spatiotemporal Lightning Risk Assessment Using Lightning Mapping Data

Weather, Climate, and Society, 2021
AbstractA lightning risk assessment for application to human safety was created and applied in 10 west Texas locations from 2 May 2016 to 30 September 2016. The method combined spatial lightning mapping data, probabilistic risk calculation adapted from the International Electrotechnical Commission Standard 62305-2, and weighted average interpolation to

Lightning mapping interferometer observations on lightning discharge

2017 XXXIInd General Assembly and Scientific Symposium of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI GASS), 2017
The temporal and spatial development characteristics of a rocket-triggered lightning and a nature lightning flash with multiple-ground terminations are discussed, using two-dimensional lightning radiation sources mapping result based on short-baseline time-difference of arrival (TDOA) technology along with simultaneous observations of high-speed camera

Mapping lightning fatality risk

2014 International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP), 2014
A new method to calculate lightning fatality risk is presented. This new method uses GIS software to multiply lightning flash density and population density on a grid and display the results on a map. The method is verified against observed lightning fatalities in the United States and appears to work well.

Radar Precipitation Maps as Lightning Indicators

Journal of Applied Meteorology, 1978
Abstract Radar maps of precipitation at a height of 6 km have been studied for the thunderstorms of one July day. Regions on these maps within which the intensity level exceeds 30 dBZ (corresponding to a rainfall rate of 2.8 mm h−1) represent thunderstorms, some single-celled and some multi-celled.
