Lightning Overvoltage of UHVDC Transmission System

2017
The UHVDC transmission line has characteristics of long line, high tower, and high operating voltage of the conductors, being not beneficial to the lightning protection. This chapter discusses the main differences in lightning protection of AC and DC lines and characteristics of lightning withstand performance for UHVDC lines.

Overvoltages Caused by Indirect Lightning Strokes

2007
This chapter describes the conventional basic impulse insulation level (BIL) as the insulation strength under lightning impulse voltages. A lightning stroke is defined as a direct stroke if it hits either the tower or the shield wire or the phase conductor.

Study of lightning overvoltage transients using ATP

2015 International Conference on Circuits, Power and Computing Technologies [ICCPCT-2015], 2015
Rapid development of transmission and distribution network requires an in-depth research and development work for their proper operation. Protection of the components used in transmission and distribution substations is one of the most important factors which must be taken care of in a very efficient manner. In this paper the analysis of lightning over

Lightning overvoltages in low voltage networks

14th International Conference and Exhibition on Electricity Distribution (CIRED 1997 - Distributing Power for the Millennium), 1997
The European Standard EN 50160 “Voltage characteristics of electricity supplied by public distribution systems” indicates that in low voltage power systems the transient overvoltages between line conductors and earth will not exceed 6 kV peak, but higher values occur occasionally.

Lightning overvoltage protection for financial computerizing systems

Proceedings. Asia-Pacific Conference on Environmental Electromagnetics. CEEM'2000 (IEEE Cat. No.00EX402), 2002
Financial systems are nowadays dependent on electronic data processing technology. One of the most frequent causes of failure in this highly sensitive system are overvoltages mostly caused by lightning. This paper describes how lightning electromagnetic pulse intrudes into computer information systems and causes system damage. Damage prevention is also

Study on transferred lightning overvoltage in microgrid

2010 Asia-Pacific International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility, 2010
If the microgrid is stroke by lightning, the lightning overvoltage which transferred though distribution transformer has great influence on the safety of the microgrid. The models of microgrid and high-frequency transformers are established based on the electromagnetic transient calculation program PSCAD/EMTDC.

Analysis of Lightning-Induced Overvoltage Waveform Parameters

2018 34th International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP), 2018
As the structure of power grid becomes more and more complex, the previous lightning overvoltage statistical waveform is no longer suitable for the current power system. So the lightning overvoltage need to be measured to restatistic. In this paper, the measuring system based on Pockels effects and a method of waveform processing are proposed to ...

Simulation analysis on lightning overvoltage of 500kV substation

IET Conference Proceedings, 2021
500kV Nanning substation is the pivot of the power transmission from west to East.In the past 10 years, Nanning substation has been expanded and operation mode has changed. It will have a negative impact on the operation of the local power grid when lightning damage accident happened in Nanning substation.

Lightning Overvoltages in Low-Voltage Circuit for Various Lightning Striking Points

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2010
Lightning overvoltages in low-voltage circuits in houses originating from a distribution line or an antenna have been actively studied. However, the mechanism by which damage is caused to home appliances due to a lightning strike to the ground near the house is still unclear.
