Limulus Amebocyte Lysate Test in Neonates
American Journal of Clinical Pathology, 1976The limulus amebocyte lysate test for endotoxin was done on samples of blood from 22 well babies and 33 neonates in an intensive-care nursery. The objective was to determine whether falsely positive test results occurred in samples from newborn infants during acquisition of usual bowel flora.

The limulus amebocyte lysate test has been shown to be a highly sensitive indicator of endotoxin. Our studies showed that as little as 5 ng of endotoxin could be detected in aqueous or vitreous humor in vitro, although 10 microgram endotoxin injected into the aqueous could not be detected.

Clinical Experience on the Detection of Endotoxemia with the Limulus Test
Journal of Infectious Diseases, 1973Eighty-three hospitalized patients suspected of having serious infections were studied for the presence of circulating endotoxin; the limulus lysate test was used. Although 39 patients in this group were infected with organisms capable of releasing endotoxin into the circulation, only two patients had a positive test.

One hundred fifty-four tests were performed, with simultaneous blood cultures available for 143 of these.

[Pyrogen testing in vitro using the Limulus test].
Arzneimittel-Forschung, 1975The applicability of the Limulus test for the pyrogen test was checked in comparison to the pyrogen test in rabbits. In 6 out of 24 lots of raw materials and drugs pyrogens could be detected by means of the pyrogen test in rabbits. 2 of these 6 lots showed positive reaction in the Limulus test, there were no false positive results.

[Comparison of the Limulus test with the pyrogen test in rabbits].
Acta biologica et medica Germanica, 1980The Limulus test was compared with the official pyrogen test in rabbits for detecting pyrogens in medical devices for single use. 46 samples were examined. Two of them were positive in the rabbit test and also in the Limulus test; 5 samples were only positive in the Limulus test. This is in agreement with published papers.
