Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.

Benchmarking Vectorized Building Footprint Extraction from Very High Resolution Aerial Imagery [PDF]

open access: yesThe International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences
Accurate, topologically consistent building footprints are essential for building reconstruction and GIS applications. But high-resolution orthophotos often contain occlusions (trees, cast shadows, etc.) or dense roof structures that challenge pixel ...

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Innovative segmentation technique for aerial power lines via amplitude stretching transform

open access: yesScientific Reports
Accurate segmentation of power line targets helps quickly locate faults, evaluate line conditions, and provides key image data support and analysis for the safe and stable operation of the power system. The aerial power line in segmentation due to the ...

Topics on line segments and polygons

open access: yesDiscrete Mathematics, 1996
For finite sets of pairwise disjoint line segments in the plane, figures such as simple polygons, simple paths, or trees are considered, where the condition is that the figure may only use the endpoints of the line segments and may not intersect any line segment properly.

Conserved binding mode but diverse interfaces of MreC‐PBP2 interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The crystal structure of abMreC reveals a conserved two β‐barrel architecture and provides structural insights into its role within the bacterial elongasome. The abMreC–abPBP2 complex model identifies the molecular basis of MreC‐mediated PBP2 recognition, contributing to the regulation of peptidoglycan synthesis.

Multiband Segmentation of a Spectroscopic Line Data Cube: Application to the HI Data Cube of the Spiral Galaxy NGC 4254

open access: yesEURASIP Journal on Advances in Signal Processing, 2005
A new method for the multiband segmentation of a spectroscopic line data cube is presented. This method is intended to help astronomers to handle complex spectroscopic line data cubes where the inspection of the channel and moment maps is difficult. Due

The Multiscale Line Segment Detector [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We propose a multiscale extension of a well-known line segment detector, LSD. We show that its multiscale nature makes it much less susceptible to over-segmentation and more robust to low contrast and less sensitive to noise, while keeping the parameter-less advantage of LSD and still being fast.

Microbiome‐blood–brain barrier interactions in aging — mechanisms and therapeutic potential

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Aging reshapes the gut microbiome (↓SCFA‐producing commensals; ↑pro‐inflammatory outputs), shifting circulating metabolites (↓SCFAs; ↑LPS, ↑TMAO, ↑PAA) that act at the BBB to increase nonspecific transcytosis, alter transport, and promote astrocyte reactivity, heightening brain vulnerability.

Structure‐forward targeting of claudins with synthetic binders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Claudins form the paracellular barriers between epithelial and endothelial tissues at tight junctions and are targets for molecular binders with the goal of modulating barrier permeability. Claudin‐binding molecules are relevant in drug delivery or in altering claudin interactions with disease‐causing proteins.
