Corals and Reef‐Dwelling Fish Regulate Carbon Storage and Cycling Processes in Coral Reef Ecosystems

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Coral reefs are biodiversity hotspots, yet their role in carbon storage and cycling remains poorly understood. Using field surveys and modeling in the South China Sea, we reveal the overlooked potential of carbon storage in reef ecosystems and how reef fish, corals, and surface sediment jointly shape reef carbon reservoirs.

Population characteristics and habitat suitability of Asian elephants (Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758) in the Khao Yai National Park, Thailand

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Ecology, 2019
The aim of this study was to investigate the population and habitat of wild elephants in the Khao Yai National Park, to provide elephant population densities using the line transect method. Habitat suitability was also assessed based on the data obtained

Catechol Derivative‐Based Bioadhesives: Molecular Design for Precision Medical Adhesion

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study utilizes tree‐inspired side‐chain engineering to graft five catechol derivatives onto PVA, systematically revealing how side‐chain length and substituents regulate adhesion and cohesion properties. Among them, the PVA‐CA patch demonstrates superior tissue adhesion, biocompatibility, and promotes regeneration, establishing a programmable ...

Contrasting aerial moose population estimation methods and evaluating sightability in west‐central Alberta, Canada

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2014
Population assessment is a primary component of ungulate management, but managers are continuously under pressure to reduce survey cost. Another concern in aerial surveys is accounting for undetected animals (i.e., visibility bias).

Estimating residue : line transect method (1993) [PDF]

open access: yes, 1993
Missouri producers have chosen conservation tillage as part of their conservation compliance plans. Conservation tillage means leaving 30 percent or more of the ground surface covered with residue- measured immediately after planting.

Reinnervation of Muscle Targets Enhances the Separability of Motor Unit Signals Following Peripheral Nerve Transfers

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Injured or cut peripheral nerves can be surgically rerouted to reinnervate new muscle targets. This study demonstrates reinnervated muscles exhibit enhanced separability between individual motor unit signals, which can simplify signal recording and decomposition. These findings highlight the potential of reinnervated muscle to serve as a key biological

Prospective Feasibility Study of Laparoscopic and Robotic Distal Gastrectomy for Advanced Gastric Cancer to Verify the Safety of Surgical Proximal Margins

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Ensuring an adequate surgical proximal margin (SPM) is crucial in radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer. However, the lack of tactile feedback in laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (LDG) and robotic distal gastrectomy (RDG) poses challenges in precisely determining tumor boundaries, particularly in advanced gastric cancer, where tumor ...

Surveying abundance and stand type associations of Formica aquilonia and F. lugubris (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) nest mounds over an extensive area: Trialing a novel method

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Entomology, 2012
Red wood ants are ecologically important members of woodland communities, and some species are of conservation concern. They occur commonly only in certain habitats in Britain, but there is limited knowledge of their numbers and distribution.
