Preloaded hopping with linear multi-modal actuation

open access: yes, 2013
For more dexterous and agile legged robot locomotion, alternative actuation has been one of the most long-awaited technologies. The goal of this paper is to investigate the use of newly developed actuator, the so-called Linear Multi-Modal Actuator (LMMA),

Transfer Printing and Reconfiguration of Soft Electronics Using Digital Microfluidics and Laser Machining

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This paper presents a digital microfluidics‐based technique for transferring and reconfiguring soft nanomembranes. Laser‐machined nanothin membranes are picked up, transported, and aligned via tailored surface tension and the actuation of water droplets, enabling the development of flexible electronics, the integration of functional materials on 3D ...

Dynamic Analysis of a Micro Beam-Based Tactile Sensor Actuated by Fringing Electrostatic Fields

open access: yesMicromachines, 2019
A new kind of fringing electrostatic actuation mode is developed. In this new actuation mode, the expression of fringing electrostatic force is found. The nonlinear dynamic analysis of this new actuation mode is presented by using the Method of Multiple ...

Near‐Infrared Light‐Driven Zn/Au Janus Micromotors for Multiplex SERS Detection of Anticancer Drugs

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Zn/Au Janus micromotors, propelled by thermophoretic effects under NIR light, function as active SERS platforms for single and multiplex detection of anticancer drugs. Their dynamic motion enhances analyte exchange at the Au interface, reducing saturation and competitive adsorption, thereby improving sensitivity and extending the linear detection range.

Cooperative Micromanipulation Using the Independent Actuation of Fifty Microrobots in Parallel

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Micromanipulation for applications in areas such as tissue engineering can require mesoscale structures to be assembled with microscale resolution. One method for achieving such manipulation is the parallel actuation of many microrobots in parallel ...

3D Printing Innovations in Polymeric Porous and Patterned Architecture

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Polymeric foams occupy a unique structural space between dense solids and open networks, where engineered void fraction governs mechanical compliance, thermal resistance, and mass transport. Additive manufacturing now enables precise spatial control over cellular architecture, unlocking designer foam structures across applications spanning crash ...

Quantifying Subsurface Weak in‐Plane Magnetization of Mixed Phase BiFeO3 by Scanning Nitrogen Vacancy Magnetometry

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We use scanning nitrogen vacancy magnetometry to directly image the weak in‐plane magnetic moments in mixed phase BiFeO3 at the nanoscale and quantify the local magnetic moments to be 18.8±2.0 μB/nm2 in the rhombohedral‐like phase and 1.5±0.6 μB/nm2 in the well‐known non‐magnetic tetragonal‐like phase.

Superelasticity and cryogenic linear shape memory effects of CaFe2As2

open access: yesNature Communications, 2017
Shape memory materials are capable of returning to their original form post-deformation, but those with high actuation performances remain scarce.
