Linear Mixed Effects Models

2007
Statistical models provide a framework in which to describe the biological process giving rise to the data of interest. The construction of this model requires balancing adequate representation of the process with simplicity. Experiments involving multiple (correlated) observations per subject do not satisfy the assumption of independence required for ...

Excitons: Linear and non-linear optical effects

Il Nuovo Cimento D, 1993
Selection rules and polarization dependence properties of one- and two-photon optical spectrocopies to exciton states in semiconductors are briefly discussed. The non-local effects in the description of the exciton in semiconductors are also considered and their importance is shown by presenting a gauge-invariant calculation of the two-photon ...

The Linear Hall Effect

IBM Journal of Research and Development, 1957
A new method for handling the Boltzmann equation is used to obtain, without approximation, a general formula for the linear Hall effect in a solid electronic conductor. Expressions for the conductivity in no magnetic field and for the quadratic magnetoconductivity are also obtained.

Effect of obesity on linear growth

Current Opinion in Endocrinology, Diabetes & Obesity, 2013
To describe our current understanding of the mechanisms involved in the regulation of linear growth in childhood obesity. The developmental origins hypothesis has focused on low birth weight individuals with subsequent obesity, identifying a cascade of neuroendocrine regulatory factors involved in the progressive increase in body fat and metabolic risk.

Inertial Effects on Linear and Locally Linear Flows

Aerosol Science and Technology, 1985
The dynamics of a suspension of particles in a gas may be characterized by the coexistence of a nearly equilibrated incompressible component (the gas) with a highly compressible component, which is often very far from equilibrium (the particle phase). The governing equations for such a system are complicated due to the coupling between the two phases ...

On the linear magnetoelectric effect

Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, 1990
A complete analysis of the linear magnetoelectric (ME) effect is carried out which exploits the PT symmetry of the ME susceptibility tensor alpha . The existing (or 'old') theory in effect considers only the time-reversal antisymmetry of alpha , with the result that it restricts the effect to magnetic crystals.

Effect of demodulator errors on predistortion linearization

IEEE Transactions on Broadcasting, 1999
Any errors in a linearization system for power amplifiers will affect linearization results. In this paper the effect of the demodulator errors on a few adaptive predistortion techniques is studied. The investigations are focused on the complex gain predistorter and the mapping predistorter.

Democracy and growth : is the effect non-linear? [PDF]

open access: possibleEconomic Research Guardian, 2008
The paper provides a survey of theoretical and empirical literature on non-linear impact of democracy on economic growth. First, it looks at two main approaches to the non-linearity: the U-shape and the inverse U-shape. Then it proceeds by looking at the specifics of hybrid regimes and tries to understand, whether the results could be driven by ...

Linear and nonlinear susceptibility effects in Y2Fe17 and Er2Fe17

2007
The thermal dependence of the linear and nonlinear ac susceptibilities of the ferromagnetic Y2Fe17 and of the ferrimagnetic Er2Fe17 intermetallic compounds is investigated as a function of the amplitude and frequency of the applied ac field. In both compounds, the change of sign at TC and the behavior below and above the ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic ...
