Linear and generalized linear mixed effects models
2009In Chapter 8 we learned about the concept of hierarchical modeling, a data analysis approach that is appropriate when we have multiple measurements within each of several groups. In that chapter, variation in the data was represented with a between-group sampling model for group-specific means, in addition to a within-group sampling model to represent ...

Effect of linear absorption on self-focusing
Optics Letters, 1988We report the effect of linear absorption on self-focusing. Our experimental results show that power loss due to linear absorption before focus is responsible for the increase in the threshold power for self-focusing and that the critical power is independent of the linear absorption.

Linear response and the quantized Hall effect
Physical Review B, 1985A linear response expression for the Hall conductance ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{\mathrm{xy}}$ of interacting two-dimensional electrons in a strong magnetic field is derived. When the system is dissipationless, ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{\mathrm{xy}}$ can be written solely in terms of the density-density response function ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{\mathrm{nn ...

Moderating effects of subgroups in linear models
Biometrika, 1989Linear regression models with two random influences are considered. One of the influences is assumed to be a (discrete) qualitative factor whose levels define subgroups. The situation is elsewhere defined as a linear regression model 2 within (random) groups. The main effects of the levels of the qualitative factor are called moderating effects.

Remarks on Beck's Effects: Linearity in Syntax
