A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Factoring linear differential operators on measure chains

open access: yesJournal of Inequalities and Applications, 2001
We extend to measure chains Abel's theorem, the existence of a set of positive Wronskians, and the Polya and Trench factorizations of disconjugate linear -differential operators.

Speeding up tsunami forecasting to boost tsunami warning in Chile [PDF]

open access: yesNatural Hazards and Earth System Sciences, 2019
Despite the occurrence of several large earthquakes during the last decade, Chile continues to have a great tsunamigenic potential. This arises as a consequence of the large amount of strain accumulated along a subduction zone that runs parallel to its ...

RF photonic delay lines using space-division multiplexing

open access: yes, 2018
We review our last work on dispersion-engineered heterogeneous multicore fiber links designed to act as tunable true time delay lines for radiofrequency signals.

Soil Moisture Detection and Linear Deceleration Control Strategy Enhancing Trenching Depth Precision and Stability for Rapeseed Sowing

open access: yesAgriculture
Sowing depth significantly affects the germination of rapeseed, and different soil moisture conditions require corresponding sowing depths. However, most current trenching devices do not account for soil moisture content, and commonly used hydraulic or constant-force trenching equipment also exhibits deficiencies in stability and consistency.

Aggressive prostate cancer is associated with pericyte dysfunction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumor‐produced TGF‐β drives pericyte dysfunction in prostate cancer. This dysfunction is characterized by downregulation of some canonical pericyte markers (i.e., DES, CSPG4, and ACTA2) while maintaining the expression of others (i.e., PDGFRB, NOTCH3, and RGS5).

Experimental study on the modulus of soil reaction for plastic pipes buried in lightweight cellular concrete backfill

open access: yesUnderground Space
The modulus of soil reaction, representing the stiffness of a soil surrounding pipes, is a critical parameter in the design of buried flexible pipes. This study conducted plate loading tests on corrugated polyvinyl chloride, smooth polyvinyl chloride ...

In vitro models of cancer‐associated fibroblast heterogeneity uncover subtype‐specific effects of CRISPR perturbations

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Development of therapies targeting cancer‐associated fibroblasts (CAFs) necessitates preclinical model systems that faithfully represent CAF–tumor biology. We established an in vitro coculture system of patient‐derived pancreatic CAFs and tumor cell lines and demonstrated its recapitulation of primary CAF–tumor biology with single‐cell transcriptomics ...

Drivers of Bacterial α- and β-Diversity Patterns and Functioning in Subsurface Hadal Sediments

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2019
Oceanic trenches at hadal (>6,000 m) depths are hot spots of organic matter deposition and mineralization and can host abundant and active bacterial assemblages.

Measuring and modeling optical diffraction from subwavelength features [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
We describe a technique for studying scattering from subwavelength features. A simple scatterometer was developed to measure the scattering from the single-submicrometer, subwavelength features generated with a focused ion beam system.
