Connectionist Modeling of Linguistic Quantifiers
2005This paper presents a new connectionist model of the grounding of linguistic quantifiers in perception that takes into consideration the contextual factors affecting the use of vague quantifiers. A preliminary validation of the model is presented through the training and testing of the model with experimental data on the rating of quantifiers.

Linguistic hidden Markov models
The 12th IEEE International Conference on Fuzzy Systems, 2003. FUZZ '03., 2004In this paper we develop a hidden Markov model (HMM), called the linguistic HMM (LHMM), suitable for processing sequences of fuzzy vectors. A fuzzy vector B is an n-tuple of fuzzy numbers. Since fuzzy numbers are often associated with linguistic terms, such as "small," "medium," etc., a fuzzy vector can also be called a linguistic vector.

Abstract This chapter presents Locke’s theory of ideational and linguistic intentionality as based on the acceptance of the speech community. While Locke’s view is commonly taken to be individualistic, it is often overlooked that his position is clearly embedded in an anthropological view that deems humans as inherently social animals ...

Linguistic decision-making models
International Journal of Intelligent Systems, 1992Summary: Using linguistic values to assess results and information about external factors is quite usual in real decision situations. We present a general model for such problems. Utilities are evaluated in a term set of labels and the information is supposed to be a linguistic evidence, that is, is to be represented by a basic assignment of ...

Linguistic model for axle fatigue
2012 IEEE International Conference on Fuzzy Systems, 2012Army ground vehicles often operate in extremely severe environmental and battlefield conditions. Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) allows maintenance to be performed based on evidence of need provided by reliability modeling and/or other enabling technologies, thus reducing maintenance costs and increasing vehicle availability.

A hierarchical model of a linguistic variable
Information Sciences, 2011In this work a theoretical hierarchical model of dichotomous linguistic variables is presented. The model incorporates certain features of the approximate reasoning approach and others of the Fuzzy Control approach to Fuzzy Linguistic Variables. It allows sharing of the same hierarchical structure between the syntactic definition of a linguistic ...

Modelling the Evolution of Linguistic Diversity
1999Some recent Artificial Life models have attempted to explain the origin of linguistic diversity with varying conclusions and explanations. We posit, contrary to some existing Artificial Life work, that linguistic diversity should naturally emerge in spatially organised populations of language learners, and this is supported by our experimental work and

A Linguistic Model of Informed Consent
Journal of Medicine and Philosophy, 1996The current disclosure model of informed consent ignores the linguistic complexity of any act of communication, and the increased risk of difficulties in the special circumstances of informed consent. This article explores, through linguistic analysis, the specificity of informed consent as a speech act, a communication act, and a form of dialogue ...

Linguistic Consistency of Goal Models
2014Goal models are used for the elicitation and specification of strategic requirements in early phases of the software engineering lifecycle. By explicitly modeling requirements on a strategic level, these goals provide input for the derivation of operational software specifications.
