In southern Ukraine, we sampled vegetation and soil in virgin grass steppe and old fields aged from 6 to ca. 97 years. The functional characteristics of steppe vegetation seem to recover much faster than its biodiversity and soil properties. However, based on our results, 100 years can be enough for such an ecosystem to self‐restore.

Abstract Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a reactive oxygen species (ROS) and a key modulator of the development and architecture of the root system under physiological and adverse environmental conditions. Nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) also exert myriad functions on plant development and signalling. Accumulating pieces of evidence show that

Twenty‐two years of vegetation succession on the constructed Danish island Peberholm
Peberholm is a constructed Danish island in the Øresund strait. It was primarily constructed by calcareous clay from the sea floor, and is traversed by a highway and a railway. Being constructed from material without a seed bank, Peberholm constituted a good opportunity to study primary succession in an anthropogenic context. In this study, data from a

Developing and Validating Species Distribution Models for Wetland Plants Across Europe. [PDF]
We fitted species distribution models (SDMs) for 265 wetland plant species in Europe. We validated predicted occurrences using independent data. The SDMs showed a high predictive performance, such that our SDMs can be used to predict broad‐scale distributions of wetland plants.

Influence of diesel fuel on seed germination [PDF]
The use of plant-based systems to remediate contaminated soils has become an area of intense scientific study in recent years and it is apparent that plants which grow well in contaminated soils need to be identified and screened for use in ...

Optimization of podophyllotoxin extraction method fromLinum albumcell cultures
Suspension cultures of Linum album Kotschy ex Boiss. (Linaceae) accumulate podophyllotoxin (an anticancer agent) and could therefore serve as an alternative source of this important aryltetralin lactone lignan. The present work compared four podophyllotoxin extraction methods and optimization of the best one by using single factor experiments.Linum ...
