2003Linum usitatissimum (L.) is grown as linseed (for oil) or flax (for fibre) and is one of the oldest cultivated plants in temperate regions. The oilseed types (linseed or oil flax) compared to the fibre types (flax) have shorter and thicker stems with more branches, whereas flax produces fewer capsules and smaller seeds. TAXON, 1989The Uppsala specimen was annotated by Linnaeus, and appears to have been in his collection prior to the description of the species. It is the only specimen of Clematis virginiana annotated as such by Linnaeus, and as far as we can see, the only actual specimen he had at hand when describing the species.
