Most animal‐derived major allergens causing respiratory sensitization belong to the family of proteins called lipocalins. Their sequential identity varies but the three‐dimensional structure is conserved. They are present in body fluids and secretions. Several lipocalins are able to bind and transport small hydrophobic ligands like retinol.
