Lipocalins and cancer

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Protein Structure and Molecular Enzymology, 2000
Lipocalins are mainly extracellular carriers of lipophilic molecules, though exceptions with properties like prostaglandin synthesis and protease inhibition are observed for specific lipocalins. The interest concerning lipocalins in cancer has so far been focussed to the variations in concentration and the modification of lipocalin expression in ...

Animal Lipocalin Allergens

Current Allergy and Asthma Reports, 2012
Lipocalins represent the most important group of inhalant animal allergens. For some of them, three-dimensional protein structures have been resolved, but their functions are still elusive. Lipocalins generally display a low sequence identity between family members.

Lipocalin allergens

Allergy, 2001
Most animal‐derived major allergens causing respiratory sensitization belong to the family of proteins called lipocalins. Their sequential identity varies but the three‐dimensional structure is conserved. They are present in body fluids and secretions. Several lipocalins are able to bind and transport small hydrophobic ligands like retinol.

The Lipocalins Retinol-Binding Protein-4, Lipocalin-2 and Lipocalin-Type Prostaglandin D2-Synthase Correlate with Markers of Inflammatory Activity, Alcohol Intake and Blood Lipids, But not with Insulin Sensitivity in Metabolically Healthy 58-year-Old Swedish Men

open access: yesExperimental and Clinical Endocrinology and Diabetes, 2011
The lipocalins retinol-binding protein (RBP)-4, lipocalin-2 and lipocalin-type prostaglandin D-synthase (L-PGDS) have been suggested to mediate obesity-associated insulin resistance and other metabolic co-morbidities.

Human tear lipocalin

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Protein Structure and Molecular Enzymology, 2000
Human tear prealbumin, now called tear lipocalin, was originally described as a major protein of human tear fluid, which was thought to be tear specific. However, recent investigations demonstrated that it is identical with lingual von Ebner's gland protein, and is also produced in prostate, nasal mucosa and tracheal mucosa.

Lipocalins as biochemical markers of disease

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Protein Structure and Molecular Enzymology, 2000
Lipocalins as biochemical markers of disease have been used extensively. The clinical indications relate to almost any field of medicine, such as inflammatory disease, cancer, lipid disorders, liver and kidney function. Some of the more well-known lipocalins that have been used as markers of disease are orosomucoid, Protein HC (alpha(1)-microglobulin),

The role of lipocalins in airway disease

Clinical & Experimental Allergy, 2013
SummaryThe pathogenesis of allergic airway inflammation and disease is complex and still not fully understood. Many cells, factors and mediators are involved in the different aspects of induction, maintenance and persistence of airway inflammation. The heterogeneity and redundancy of this system is one of the main reasons why novel therapeutic targets ...

Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin

Current Opinion in Critical Care, 2010
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a major clinical problem in hospitalized patients. Effective treatment and early diagnosis of this syndrome are not currently available. This review focuses on recent studies examining the biological characteristics and the diagnostic and prognostic value of a novel biomarker--neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin ...

Experimentally determined lipocalin structures

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Protein Structure and Molecular Enzymology, 2000
Twelve structures of distinct members of the lipocalin protein family have been solved experimentally. These structures have revolutionised our understanding of the properties of the lipocalins. Many more members of the family have been crystallised and now await structure solution.
