Spatial variation in liquefaction risk

Géotechnique, 1998
Basic concepts and methods of random field theory, useful for characterizing 'distributed disordered systems', are applied to a soil deposit to evaluate the spatial extent of liquefaction under typical conditions. The soil deposit, modelled after a site located at the Wildlife Management Area in California, is represented by a three-dimensional random

Liquefaction risk analysis for a harbor fill

International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences & Geomechanics Abstracts, 1989
Abstract Many coastal fills constructed of dredged and dumped sand are loose and may be susceptible to liquefaction. This paper describes a methodology for liquefaction risk analysis for such fills and uses Harbor Island, a hydraulic fill in San Diego Bay, as an example.

Risk Analysis for Ground Failure by Liquefaction

Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division, 1978
A risk analysis has been developed for studying the likelihood of earthquake-induced ground failure by liquefaction. In this analysis, a new empirical method for evaluating the liquefaction potential at a site is employed. The method is based on interpretation of case histories in terms of earthquake magnitude and hypocentral distance.

Mitigation of Liquefaction Risk by Innovative Ground Improvement Techniques

Indian Geotechnical Journal, 2022
The reduction of soil susceptibility to earthquake induced liquefaction is now considered a crucial issue in most of the seismic areas around the world, because it has been clearly seen that the damages on structures caused by the large reduction of effective stresses in the soil may overcome those induced by the inertial seismic forces.

Geostatistical approach for multi-scale seismic liquefaction risk assessment

2021
<p>The Seismic Microzonation studies (SMs), promoted all over the Italian territory by the Department of Civil Protection, provide fundamental knowledge of the subsoil response in seismic conditions at the urban scale. Amplification phenomena related to lithostratigraphic and morphological characteristics, instabilities and permanent ...

Probabilistic liquefaction risk analysis including fuzzy variables

Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering, 1997
Abstract A new method of probabilistic liquefaction risk analysis is developed. The variables whose effect on the process of liquefaction are known vaguely and described only through imprecise linguistic terms, are treated as fuzzy variables. The combined effect of the fuzzy variables is introduced into a basic model of transformed into a random ...

Liquefaction risk assessment: lesson learned from a case study

Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering for Protection and Development of Environment and Constructions, 2019
A detailed and comprehensive assessment of risk is the basis to protect communities and assist decision-making towards the sustainable management of territories. For liquefaction this process implies to simultaneously investigate seismic hazard, susceptibility of the subsoil, vulnerability of structures, economic and social relevance of critical ...

Property Risk Assessment for Liquefied Natural Gas Liquefaction Plants

Volume 9: Oil and Gas Applications; Supercritical CO2 Power Cycles; Wind Energy, 2019
Abstract Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) liquefaction plants have become increasingly important as natural gas is exported from the United States of America to markets world-wide. Downtime of any part of the process train (gas turbine, compressors, controls, etc.) due to failure of one or more of its components can result in high costs.
