Grain boundaries (GBs) in polycrystalline materials often block charge transport and drive degradation. Using Gd‐doped CeO2 as a model electrolyte used in fuel/electrolysis cells, we developed a core‐shell infiltration method to selectively modify GB chemistry and space charge potential, achieving orders‐of‐magnitude ionic conductivity changes.

Self‐Assembled Lipids as Soft Dielectrics
Self‐assembled lipid bilayers serve as soft dielectric materials for ultrathin electronics. Using liquid‐metal parallel‐plate junctions, the capacitance and dielectric breakdown of dehydrated lipid films are characterized. Dielectric behavior is controlled by lipid molecular structure, cholesterol content, and assembly conditions, providing molecular ...

Coordinated Architectural and Chemical Reinforcement in the Crushing Mandible of a Soldier Termite
The crushing mandible of a soldier termite withstands substantial biting loads despite lacking mineral. Its cuticle is partitioned: convex teeth pair hardness and zinc enrichment with aligned chitin fibers for contact durability, while stiffer concave regions between teeth carry bending loads.

Performance Improvements of Standalone Liquid Air Energy Storage
Due to the threat of climate change, our energy systems tend to adopt lower-carbon energy sources, such as renewables. In addition, our energy systems are likely to follow another trend from very large centralized industrial energy systems to decentralized energy hubs serving both industry and the domestic sector in the coming years.
