Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Regimes in the Response of Photomechanical Materials

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2022
Photomechanical materials perform mechanical work in response to illumination. Photoisomerization-based photomechanical materials may operate in different regimes depending on the intensity of the illuminating light.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Dynamic control of active droplets using light-responsive chiral liquid crystal environment

open access: yesCommunications Physics
Microscopic active droplets are of interest since they can be used to transport matter from one point to another. In this work, we demonstrate an approach to control the direction of active droplet propulsion by a photoresponsive cholesteric liquid ...

Anatomy of the quantum melting of the two dimensional Wigner crystal

open access: yes, 2005
The Fermi liquid-Wigner crystal transition in a two dimensional electronic system is revisited with a focus on the nature of the fixed node approximation done in quantum Monte Carlo calculations. Recently, we proposed (Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 046801 (2005))

Sliding of Electron Crystal of Finite Size on the Surface of Superfluid He-4 Confined in a Microchannel [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
We present a new study of the nonlinear transport of a two-dimensional electron crystal on the surface of liquid helium confined in a 10 micrometer-wide channel in which the effective length of the crystal can be varied from 10 to 215 micrometers. At low

Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Materials for Tunable Diffractive Optics

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, 2018
Modern optics and photonics constantly require break‐through materials and designs in order to achieve miniature, lightweight, highly tunable, and effective optical devices. One of the basic optical components is the diffraction grating (DG), widely used

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...
