Toward Programmed Complex Stress-Induced Mechanical Deformations of Liquid Crystal Elastomers

open access: yesCrystals, 2020
We prepare a liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) with a spatially patterned liquid crystal director field from an all-acrylate LCE. Mechanical deformations of this material lead to a complex and spatially varying deformation with localised body rotations ...

Low-voltage-driven electromechanical effects of swollen liquid-crystal elastomers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We experimentally investigate, in detail, electromechanical effects in liquid-crystal elastomers (LCEs) previously swollen with low-molecular-weight liquid crystals (LMWLCs). Both polydomain (POLY) and monodomain (MONO) LCEs were studied.

Material Selection and Geometric Design for Few‐filament Shape Memory Polymer Yarns for Force Generation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A custom shape memory polymer material selection process relates quantitative application criteria (e.g., compression garment yarns) to material characterization information. The selected materials are manufactured into yarn geometries, which expand the design space by creating structural stress‐strain profiles beyond the nominal material stress‐strain

Continuum mechanics of line defects in liquid crystals and liquid crystal elastomers

open access: yesQuarterly of Applied Mathematics, 2013
This paper generalizes the Ericksen-Leslie continuum model of liquid crystals to allow for dynamically evolving line defect distributions. In analogy with recent mesoscale models of dislocations, we introduce fields that represent defects in orientational and positional order through the incompatibility of the director and deformation ‘gradient’ fields.

Dynamic Current Routing in Conductive Liquid Crystal Elastomers for Complex Deformation Actuators

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This work introduces a novel actuation control strategy in which electrical stimulation generates localized Joule heating in conductive liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) surfaces, enabling complex 3D deformations from a single homogeneous surface without preprogramming.

Compression induced stiffening and alignment of liquid crystal elastomers

open access: yes, 2016
In some embodiments, the present disclosure provides methods of strengthening liquid crystal elastomers. In some embodiments, such methods include a step of placing the liquid crystal elastomer in an environment that applies dynamic stress to the liquid ...
