Holdup in liquid‐liquid extraction columns

The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, 1961
AbstractA theoretical study of the countercurrent flow of a dispersed phase in a continuous phase resulted in the following equation relating holdup X to the flow rates of the two phases. For packed towers this equation has been used in the following form: Values of A', B', and r for three liquid pairs, and two packing types are reported, using new ...

Liquid holdup and dispersion in packed columns

Chemical Engineering Science, 1990

Liquid Holdup in Wet-Gas Pipelines

SPE Production Engineering, 1987
Summary An experimental study of two-phase flow was conducted to investigate liquid holdup in wet-gas pipelines. The liquid-holdup data were obtained by passing spheres through a 1,333-ft [406.3-m] -long, 3.068-in. [77.93-mm] -ID horizontal pipe and measuring the liquid volumes removed. Three different two-phase mixtures were used.

Liquid holdup in wire-mesh pads

Chemical Engineering Research and Design, 2010
The holdup distribution and pressure drop of five different wire-mesh pads have been investigated experimentally. The wire-mesh pad porosities ranged from 93.4 to 98.4 vol% and were tested at 1 bar with air as gas phase and water as the liquid phase. The liquid holdup in the mesh pads was measured at three locations.

Hydrodynamics of TBC with non-Newtonian liquids: Liquid holdup

Chemical Engineering and Processing: Process Intensification, 2009
Abstract An experimental study was conducted to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of a turbulent bed contractor (TBC) with non-Newtonian liquids under different operating conditions. Hollow plastic spheres fluidized in an air stream countercurrently with an aqueous solution of carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC) of an apparent viscosity ranging

Scintigraphic Measurement of Liquid Holdup in Foam Fractionation Columns

Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 2000
The profile of liquid holdup in foam fractionation columns was studied as a function of time by the use of a nuclear scintigraphic imaging technique. Sodium [(99m)Tc]pertechnetate was employed as the imaging agent and served as a marker for the amount of water present in the foam during the foam fractionation of bovine serum albumin.

Holdup and flooding in air liquid mixing

The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, 1968
AbstractThe amount of flowing air held up, or retained, under the surface of water and corn syrup solutions was measured in cylindrical tanks of different sizes using turbine type mixing impellers. Holdup is frequently used as an index of the effectiveness of gas‐liquid contacting in adsorption or stripping operations; it can be correlated with air ...

Flooding rates and holdup in packed liquid‐liquid extraction columns

AIChE Journal, 1975
AbstractCountercurrent flow of liquids in columns packed with Raschig rings was studied with fluids having a wide range of physical properties. These results, along with data reported previously from other studies, were used to develop a correlation for predicting flooding rates in packed columns that is significantly better than previous correlations.

Holdup and solvent extraction characteristics in electrostatic liquid‐liquid contactor

AIChE Journal, 1996
An unconventional contactor has been developed to aim at increasing the dispersed-phase holdup (Yamaguchi and Kanno, 1995).

Gas Holdup in Gas−Liquid Stirred Tanks

Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, 2010
A single-point optical probe is developed that can accurately obtain local gas holdup in a gas-liquid stirred tank across a wide range of operating pressures, temperatures, and fluids. It is found that the probe orientation to the flow in a stirred tank can cause underestimations in gas holdup if only a single probe orientation is used.
