Liquid metal flow measurement by neutron radiography

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment, 1996
Abstract Visualization of a liquid metal flow and image processing methods to measure the vector field are carried out by real-time neutron radiography. The JRR-3M real-time thermal neutron radiography facility in the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute was used. Lead—bismuth eutectic was used as a working fluid. Particles made from a gold—cadmium

Flow measurement techniques in heavy liquid metals

Nuclear Engineering and Design, 2010
Abstract This paper summarizes several flow measurement systems qualified in the operation of different lead–bismuth loops in the KArslruhe Liquid Metal LAboratory (KALLA) during the last 5 years. There are several experimental techniques which were well proven in air and water and thus could be transferred similarly to liquid metals: these ...

Measurements of vapor flow regimes in liquid metal pools

Fusion Engineering and Design, 2002
There is significant ongoing research within the APEX project to develop innovative first wall/blanket concepts capable of efficiently extracting useful thermal energy from magnetic fusion devices that can substantially improve the attractiveness of fusion energy systems. Among the several different ideas are solid and liquid wall concepts.

Velocity Measurement Techniques for Liquid Metal Flows

2007
Analysis and control of fluid flows, often subsidiary to industrial design issues, require measurements of the flow field. For classical transparent fluids such aswater or gas a variety of well-developed techniques (laser Doppler and parti-cle image velocimetry, Schlieren optics, interferometric techniques, etc.) havebeen established.

Novel ultrasound array measurement system for flow mapping of complex liquid metal flows

The European Physical Journal Special Topics, 2013
In magnetohydrodynamics, model experiments are commonly conducted to investigate the interaction between magnetic fields and electrically conductive fluids. The available flow instrumentation for opaque fluids usually lacks the ability to capture and visualize a velocity field in one shot.

Measurement of a Flowing Liquid Metal Film with a Chromatic Confocal Sensor

Optica Sensing Congress 2023 (AIS, FTS, HISE, Sensors, ES), 2023
A commercial chromatic confocal sensor has been used to characterize the thickness of a flowing Gallium-Indium liquid metal jet proposed as a target for a proton/deuteron accelerator.

Measurement of velocity Pronto in Liquid Metal Flow Using Electromagnetic Tomography

Transactions of the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers B, 2004
In order to measure non-intrusively velocity profile in liquid metal flow, a modified electromagnetic flowmeter was designed, which was based on electromagnetic tomography technique. Under the assumption that flow is fully-developed, axisymmetric and rectilinear, the velocity profile was reconstructed after the flowmeter equation, the first kind of ...

Local flow structures in liquid metals measured by ultrasonic Doppler velocimetry

Flow Measurement and Instrumentation, 2004
Ultrasound Doppler velocimetry (UDV) has been successfully applied to measure local velocities in mercury and the eutectic alloy InGaSn. Two different kinds of magnetic fields established the fluid motion in a cylindrical vessel. For both, the rotating and the travelling field, agreement with expectations from theory and local measurements employing ...

Liquid Metal Flow Measurements using an Ultrasonic Doppler Velocimeter

Nature Physical Science, 1973
A RECENT development for fluid flow measurement is the ultrasonic Doppler velocimeter (UDV)1–3. Clearly such a non-intrusive technique would have considerable advantages for magnetohydrodynamic flow measurement.

Local measurements in two-phase liquid-metal magneto-fluid-mechanic flow

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1984
Local measurements have been carried out in a mercury-nitrogen two-phase flow using the hot-film anemometric technique, in a cylindrical pipe with electrically insulated walls. The flow was turbulent (Re = 63000) and in the bubbly regime (〈α〉 ≈ 0.03). The maximum intensity of the magnetic field was 0.94 T.
