20.3: Novel Adaptive Liquid Lens Actuated by Liquid Crystal Pistons

SID Symposium Digest of Technical Papers, 2013
Abstract We demonstrate a novel adaptive liquid lens actuated by liquid crystal (LC) pistons. The dielectrophoretic force generated by the embedded in‐plane‐switching electrode causes the reciprocating movement of LC droplets which, in turn, changes the optical power of the resultant liquid lens.

Rayleigh-Taylor instability in oscillating liquid pistons

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, 2018
In this study, an experimental apparatus is used to excite four U-tube-shaped liquid pistons connected in series, and to study their behaviour. Some of the gas spaces are heated to induce piston oscillations; in others, gas expansion is utilised to produce a refrigeration effect.

Numerical Modeling of Liquid Piston Gas Compression

Volume 9: Heat Transfer, Fluid Flows, and Thermal Systems, Parts A, B and C, 2009
Prior research has shown that the use of liquid-pistons in place of conventional solid pistons within gas compression technologies can significantly improve the efficiency of gas compression. The liquid-piston provides the prospect for a consistent and high rate of heat extraction from the compressed gas during system operation. Consequently, the input

Thermodynamic cycle of a liquid piston pump

Renewable Energy, 1998
Abstract This paper presents a contribution to the solution of the irrigation problems of rural areas in developing regions, where conventional energy solutions are often too expensive. The work presents the operational principles, the theoretical analysis and experimental results of a pumping device, for irrigation use, that works based on a ...

Developments Towards a Liquid Piston Stirling Engine

6th International Energy Conversion Engineering Conference (IECEC), 2008
The Stirling engine possesses numerous natural benefits such as functioning from any heat source, quiet operation, and high theoretical efficiency. The limited success of Stirling engines has been partially due to the near-adiabatic operation in the working chambers, necessitating external heat exchangers that add dead space, difficulty sealing low ...

Liquid Piston Compression with Droplet Heat Transfer

51st AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting including the New Horizons Forum and Aerospace Exposition, 2013
Wind turbines and other unsteady power producing systems can benefit substantially by integrating inexpensive and easily sited pneumatic energy storage to provide a more continuous energy supply. However, pneumatic storage systems are typically inefficient since the compression work also generates thermal energy, which is generally lost to the ambient ...

Modeling of liquid-piston based design for isothermal ocean compressed air energy storage system

, 2020
Ocean renewable energy resources are intermittent, and a large scale energy storage is needed for their optimal utilization. Ocean compressed air energy storage (OCAES) system is a promising large-scale energy storage for integration of ocean energy with

Moteur Ericsson à piston liquide libre : premiers résultats expérimentaux

2023

Suppression of liquid surface instability induced by finite-amplitude oscillation in liquid piston Stirling engine

, 2020
This study addresses a problem introduced by finite-amplitude oscillations in a liquid piston thermoacoustic Stirling engine and proposes methods to overcome it. After the engine was operated by external heat, the liquid piston oscillated, keeping a flat
