The family Magnoliaceae comprises 8 to 12 genera, including some 200 species of trees and shrubs distributed in southeast Asia, the eastern United States through Central America, and from the West Indies to eastern Brazil (Harlow et al. 1991). It is divided into two subfamilies or tribes, Magnolieae and Liriodendreae (Gardiner 1989).
