STUDIES OF THE EFFECTS OF HIGH VOLTAGE ON THE PERFORMANCE AND IMPEDANCE OF LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES

open access: yes, 2017
Lithium-ion batteries play an important role in the transition away from non-renewable sources of energy. Technologies such as electric vehicles and grid energy storage require longer-lasting batteries with higher energy density and lower cost.

Fast Hydrogel Micro‐Actuators Driven by Electric Fields

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We report the fabrication of chemically programmable electroactuating microstructures through the first integration of two‐photon polymerization with electrically actuated gelatin methacrylate‐based hydrogels. By tailoring the charge of the polymer network, we demonstrate programmable polarity‐dependent bending, enabling microstructures that ...

Lithium-ion conducting ceramic/polyether composites

open access: yes, 1998
Composites of a lithium ion conducting ceramic with a lithium salt based polymer electrolyte matrix are described. Conductivity measurements as a function of the lithium ion conducting ceramic phase content in the composite show that there is a ...

La(OH)3-Based Lithium Ionic Conductor for Quasi-Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

open access: yes
Quasi-solid-state lithium metal batteries (QSSLMBs) hold great promise for next-generation energy storage but face major challenges for applications, including air instability of electrolytes, high synthesis cost, and poor interfacial compatibility. Here,

Upscaling the Fabrication of Rod‐Shaped Microgels: A Microfluidic Method Combining Step‐Emulsification With Consecutive Droplet Confinement in Parallelized Microchannels

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A microfluidic method is presented which enables parallelized fabrication of rod‐shaped microgels, based on step‐emulsification (SE) droplet generation and subsequent droplet distribution and confinement, combined in a single device. Microgel rods are fabricated in parallel at different flow rates based on two light‐mediated crosslinking chemistries ...

CO2 sensor based on lithium ion conductor [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The engineering of junction formation and the electrode kinetics with respect to gas sensing has been investigated in electrochemical cells based on LiSiPO and Garnet electrolyte for the possibility of CO2 detection. Li2CO3 and Au paste were always used as sensing electrode and showed good agreement with Nernst equation.

Dynamic Electrophoretic Assembly Coupled With Water‐Splitting‐Induced pH Control Enables Precision Ion Sieving Membranes

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A green, external‐catalyst‐free route grows defect‐free covalent organic framework membranes directly on ion‐exchange supports using an alternating electric field and in situ‐generated acid. Through a self‐regulating, self‐healing mechanism, the membranes achieve near‐complete, ultra‐fast separation of monovalent ions such as Li+, Na+, and K+, offering

How “Green” is Your Functional Material? Assessing Environmental Impacts of Multi‐Step Synthetic Protocols in Material Sciences at Various Technology Levels

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Environmental Synthesis Radar (ESR) evaluates the environmental impact of (early‐stage) multi‐step chemical syntheses, providing a holistic view by using 18 midpoint impact categories. Unlike conventional life‐cycle assessment (LCA) approaches, ESR reveals three complementary metrics: overall impact Vtotal, environmental hotspots VEF, and critical ...

In Situ Lithium Nitridosilicate Interlayer via Reactive Anolyte Design for All‐Solid‐State Silicon Anodes

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Interfacial reactions in all‐solid‐state batteries are conventionally suppressed; here, they are designed. Vacancy‐rich β‐Li3N, acting as an anolyte, reacts controllably with silicon during composite anode fabrication, building a purpose‐made lithium nitridosilicate interlayer on every particle surface.

Probing the Causes and Effects of Parasitic Reactions in Lithium-Ion Cells

open access: yes, 2018
Parasitic reactions in lithium-ion cells consume solvent, salt and active lithium ions, resulting in a loss of capacity and eventual cell failure. The projects described in this thesis have the common goal of exposing the chemical mechanisms of these ...
