What does lithostratigraphy do for us? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Peter Gutteridge’s recent Soap Box article (Geoscientist 18 v.3) prompted lively debate in the Letters page about the usefulness of lithostratigraphy.

Out in the cold? A review of Early Middle Palaeolithic settlements in northern Central Europe, age data and geological preconditions for site formation and preservation

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
The characteristics of settlement of Neanderthals in northern Central Europe during the earlier phases of the Middle Palaeolithic (Marine Isotope Stage 8–6) have been a matter of debate for decades, specifically regarding the population dynamics at such latitudes during the coldest phases. In this paper, we review the known archaeological record of the

Glaciotectonic deformation of till-covered glaciofluvial deposits in Oulu region, Finland [PDF]

open access: yesBulletin of the Geological Society of Finland, 2008
Sedimentary sequences in Isoniemi and Hangaskangas in the Oulu area of Finland have been studied using conventional sedimentological techniques including structural and clast-fabric measurements on fold and fault structures and till units. Four different

Refining the timing of Middle Pleistocene (MIS 12 to MIS 6) ice advances into northern central Europe: sedimentological analysis and single‐grain luminescence dating of glaciotectonic complexes and tunnel‐valley fills

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
We summarize the current state of knowledge on the age of the Middle Pleistocene ice advances into northern central Europe and provide 25 new single‐grain feldspar luminescence ages of Elsterian and Saalian glacigenic sediments to constrain the age of the ice advances and their tentative correlation with marine isotope stages/substages.

The Himmerkinlahti member: An indicator of intra-karelian erosion within the early Proterozoic Kuusamo Belt, Posio, northern Finland [PDF]

open access: yesBulletin of the Geological Society of Finland, 2000
The paper establishes the Himmerkinlahti Member, which is a thin metamorphosed conglomerate-sandstone unit within the middle part of the early Proterozoic (Karelian) supracrustal sequence of the Kuusamo Belt, northern Finland.

Lithostratigraphy of the Red Sea Region [PDF]

open access: yesGeoArabia, 2005
ABSTRACT The onshore and offshore Saudi Arabian Red Sea region contains a series of lithostratigraphic units that have not previously been formally defined and described. Based on an intensive study of the succession, a lithostratigraphic scheme is proposed in a lexicon format that integrates biostratigraphic, sedimentological, seismic ...

Droughts and human impact in the ancient Uaymil region of the Maya lowlands inferred from a 2800‐year sedimentary archive at Lake Kaná, Mexico

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
The relationship between the climate and societal transformation in Maya lowlands has long been debated, particularly the role of drought in shaping the civilization trajectory during the Classic Period. A high‐resolution, multi‐proxy, geochemical record from Lake Kaná, located in the underexplored Uaymil region of the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico ...
