The evidence base for ranger patrol effectiveness in conservation and how to improve it
ABSTRACT Ranger patrols are a cornerstone of wildlife protection efforts around the world and occur across all ecological governance systems. Evidence that patrols reduce threats to wildlife and enable their recovery has not been systematically examined previously.

This study was carried out to compare the ecological function of exotic pine (Pinus radiata-Pr) and native pine (Pinus tabulaeformis-Pt) in terms of litter decomposition and its related N dynamics and to evaluate if the presence of broad-leaved tree ...

Humans are not unique: difficult birth is common in placental mammals
ABSTRACT Human childbirth is widely presumed to be uniquely difficult and dangerous compared to birth in other mammals. Tight fetopelvic proportions can result in obstructed labour and contribute to high rates of maternal and neonatal mortality. Ideas summarised under the ‘obstetrical dilemma’ have contributed to this assumption by explaining difficult

Trade‐offs in avian parental care: a review of theory and meta‐analysis of brood size manipulations
ABSTRACT The selective forces shaping parental care have been studied for over 50 years. While theoretical and experimental work has yielded qualitative progress, the large body of empirical work testing predictions about parental investment based on life‐history trade‐offs has yet to be synthesized.

Leaf Litter Mixtures in Guam: Decomposition Synergism and Antagonism of Two Endangered Tree Species
Leaf litter traits among tree species exert a direct influence on spatiotemporal nutrient turnover and an indirect influence by shifting the decomposition dynamics of leaf litter mixtures including other sympatric species.

On the importance of including both sexes in animal studies – insights from home‐cage monitoring
ABSTRACT A review of behavioural studies using home‐cage monitoring (HCM) systems revealed that over 61% of studies used only male subjects, with only 24% including both sexes, despite evidence of substantial behavioural differences between male and female animals. This bias could influence the outcomes of biomedical research.

Litter composition rather than plant presence affects decomposition of tropical litter mixtures
International audienceLitter decomposition is strongly controlled by litter quality, but the composition of litter mixtures and potential interactions with live plants through root activity may also influence decomposers.
