Dammarenediol II enhances etoposide‐induced apoptosis by targeting O‐GlcNAc transferase and Akt/GSK3β/mTOR signaling in liver cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Etoposide induces DNA damage, activating p53‐dependent apoptosis via caspase‐3/7, which cleaves PARP1. Dammarenediol II enhances this apoptotic pathway by suppressing O‐GlcNAc transferase activity, further decreasing O‐GlcNAcylation. The reduction in O‐GlcNAc levels boosts p53‐driven apoptosis and influences the Akt/GSK3β/mTOR signaling pathway ...

Developing a disease prevention strategy in the Caribbean: the importance of assessing animal health related risks at the regional level [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In 2009, the Caribbean Animal Health Network (CaribVET) conducted a survey among Caribbean national Veterinary Services to assess perceptions towards the use of risk assessment (RA) by animal health services in the region and to identify the main exotic ...

TRAIL‐PEG‐Apt‐PLGA nanosystem as an aptamer‐targeted drug delivery system potential for triple‐negative breast cancer therapy using in vivo mouse model

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aptamers are used both therapeutically and as targeting agents in cancer treatment. We developed an aptamer‐targeted PLGA–TRAIL nanosystem that exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy in NOD/SCID breast cancer models. This nanosystem represents a novel biotechnological drug candidate for suppressing resistance development in breast cancer.

Growth Performance and Biochemical Profiles of Fairy Shrimp (Streptocephalus sirindhornae) Fed Natural Diets at Low and High Stocking Densities

open access: yesBiology
This study investigates the growth performance, gut content composition, and biochemical profiles of the fairy shrimp Streptocephalus sirindhornae cultured with natural diets under low and high stocking densities (20 and 40 ind. L−1).

Foraging Behavior of Zonotrichia capensis (Passeriformes: Emberizidae) and Patch Value in Young Live Fences in the Bogotá High Plateau

open access: yesActa Biológica Colombiana, 2016
The Rufous-collared Sparrow Zonotrichia capensis is a widely distributed species in neotropical America, it is tolerant to human interventions, but we know little about its foraging ecology on the Colombian Andes.

How far would you drive for fresh food? How some rural New Hampshire residents navigate a dismal food landscape [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Lack of access to food stores with healthy and affordable food is one of the central obstacles to eradicating hunger in America. Approximately 23.5 million Americans live more than a mile from a supermarket, which makes accessing healthy food more ...

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Feed of Siamese fighting fish, Betta splendens, (Regan, 1910) in open pond: live and formulated diets

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology
The growth rate and percent survival of Betta splendens when submitted to formulated diet and live food treatments are evaluated. The three different diets were used and designated as: formulated diet (basal diet); live food diet (plankton) and mixed ...

Colorectal cancer‐derived FGF19 is a metabolically active serum biomarker that exerts enteroendocrine effects on mouse liver

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Meta‐transcriptome analysis identified FGF19 as a peptide enteroendocrine hormone associated with colorectal cancer prognosis. In vivo xenograft models showed release of FGF19 into the blood at levels that correlated with tumor volumes. Tumoral‐FGF19 altered murine liver metabolism through FGFR4, thereby reducing bile acid synthesis and increasing ...
