Peak-Load Energy Management by Direct Load Control Contracts

Management Science, 2023
We study direct load control contracts that utilities use to curtail customers’ electricity consumption during peak-load periods. These contracts place limits on the number of calls and total number of hours of power reduction per customer per year as well as the duration of each call.

Expected principal stress directions under multiaxial random loading. Part I: theoretical aspects of the weight function method

open access: yesInternational Journal of Fatigue, 1999
As has been observed experimentally by many authors, the position of the fatigue fracture plane appears to strongly depend on the directions of the principal stresses or strains.

Load-Sensitive Routing with Directional Antennas

2006 IEEE 17th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications, 2006
We present a load-sensitive routing (LSR) protocol for static wireless ad hoc networks using directional antennas. This protocol uses the aggregate queue size of all nodes in a path as the load metric for choosing routes. We compare the performance of the load metric with the commonly used hop count metric using directional antennas under different ...

Direct load management of electric vehicles

2011 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP), 2011
Electrical Vehicles are gaining increasing attention, due to the opportunities and challenges they present for the energy market. On the one hand, they will allow to drastically reduce the need for oil; on the other hand they may require a significant shift in the day to day management of the electricity generation. This paper is concerned with finding

Direct Measurement of Cognitive Load in Multimedia Learning [PDF]

open access: possibleEducational Psychologist, 2003
Cognitive load theory (CLT) is gaining increasing importance in the design and evaluation of instruction, both traditional and technology based. Although it is well understood as a theoretical construct, the measurement of cognitive load induced by instructional materials in general, and by multimedia instruction in particular, mainly relies on methods

Paxillin localisation in osteocytes—Is it determined by the direction of loading?

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2008
External mechanical loading of cells aligns cytoskeletal stress fibres in the direction of principle strains and localises paxillin to the mechanosensing region. If the osteocyte cell body can indeed directly sense matrix strains, then cytoskeletal alignment and distribution of paxillin in osteocytes in situ will bear alignment to the different ...

Expected principal stress directions under multiaxial random loading. Part II: numerical simulation and experimental assessment through the weight function method

open access: yesInternational Journal of Fatigue, 1999
In Part I of the present work, the theoretical aspects of a proposed procedure to determine the expected principal stress directions under multiaxial random loading have been discussed. This procedure consists of averaging the instantaneous values of the

Unidirectional probabilistic direct control for deferrable loads

2014 IEEE Conference on Computer Communications Workshops (INFOCOM WKSHPS), 2014
The idea of harnessing the inherent flexibility in demand of many types of electric loads has been largely discussed in the last years for coping with the need to maintain the energy demand-supply balance. In particular, the fine tuning of the operation conditions of different thermostatic loads (such as air-conditioning, refrigerators, etc.) has ...

Load combination analysis by ‘Directional simulation in the load space’

Probabilistic Engineering Mechanics, 2006
Abstract The reliability of structures subjected to multiple time-varying random loads is considered herein. It is well-known that the reliability of such systems may be evaluated by considering outcrossings of the load process vector out of a safe domain, and the contribution of individual loads to structural failure may be evaluated by considering ...

An Inductor-Loaded Microstrip Directional Coupler for Directivity Enhancement

IEEE Microwave and Wireless Components Letters, 2009
A directivity-enhancement technique is demonstrated for a microstrip directional coupler. By loading the coupler with shunt inductors, the phase velocities of the even and odd modes are altered in such a way that an isolation null is achieved. Compared with other compensation techniques for directivity enhancements, the proposed method provides the ...
