Optimal local dimming based on an improved greedy algorithm

Applied Intelligence, 2020
As a new technology appeared in recent years, the local dimming can effectively reduce the power consumption of a display system and improve its display effect. A suitable local dimming algorithm should have efficient performance and can make the displayed images have higher visual quality.

Optimal local dimming for LC image formation with controllable backlighting

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Image Processing, 2013
Light emitting diode (LED)-backlit liquid crystal displays (LCDs) hold the promise of improving image quality while reducing the energy consumption with signal-dependent local dimming. However, most existing local dimming algorithms are mostly motivated by simple implementation, and they often lack concern for visual quality.

Adaptive local backlight dimming algorithm based on local histogram and image characteristics

open access: yesSPIE Proceedings, 2013
Liquid Crystal Display (LCDs) with Light Emitting Diode (LED) backlight is a very popular display technology, used for instance in television sets, monitors and mobile phones. This paper presents a new backlight dimming algorithm that exploits the characteristics of the target image, such as the local histograms and the average pixel intensity of ...

Investigating subjective attributes of quality for videos displayed with local backlight dimming

open access: yes2014 Sixth International Workshop on Quality of Multimedia Experience (QoMEX), 2014
This paper investigates what composes the quality of videos displayed on LCD with local backlight dimming. In a subjective experiment, participants assessed the level of nine attributes defined using the Qualitative Descriptive Analysis method. Results show that three attributes (Contrast, Change over time and Grain) vary significantly depending on the

Deep CNN-based local dimming technology

Applied Intelligence, 2021
Local dimming is a feature on light-emitting diode (LED) TVs that dims the backlight behind parts of the screen that are displaying black and brights the backlight behind parts of the screen that are displaying white. To improve contrast ratios (CRs) and reduce power consumption for liquid crystal displays (LCDs), local dimming technology has been ...

Local Dimming Design for LCD Backlight

2019
The local-dimming backlight has recently been presented for use in LCD TVs. However, the image resolution is low, particularly at weak edges. In this work, a local-dimming backlight is developed to improve the image contrast and reduce power dissipation. The algorithm enhances low-level edge information to improve the perceived image resolution.

Pixel compesation for locally dimmed backlight displays

2011 IEEE 19th Signal Processing and Communications Applications Conference (SIU), 2011
This paper proposes a novel pixel compensation technique for Led backlight displays. The proposed technique explicitly computes the screen intensity distribution using the point spread function (PSF) of the individual Leds to calculate per-pixel-based intensity decrease due to the dimmed Leds.
