Macrophage Extracellular Traps in Immunity and Cancer

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
As a macrophage‐mediated innate defense mechanism, the dysregulated release of METs drives chronic inflammation and influences tumor progression. Furthermore, METs exhibit a functional duality within the tumor microenvironment, capable of both promoting and suppressing tumor development.

Modelling and simulating change in reforesting mountain landscapes using a social-ecological framework [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Natural reforestation of European mountain landscapes raises major environmental and societal issues. With local stakeholders in the Pyrenees National Park area (France), we studied agricultural landscape colonisation by ash (Fraxinus excelsior) to ...

Adult Sex Ratio as a Demographic Feedback Linking Mating Systems, Parental Care, and Evolution

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Breeding systems are some of the most diverse social behavior, and our team is investigation the evolutionary causes of this diversity. This review summarises our research carried out at the University of Bath. We argue that demographic components of wild populations, especially the adult sex ratio, plays a key role driving breeding system variation ...

Indigenous Communities' Knowledge of Local Ecological Services*

open access: yes, 2004
This paper investigates in detail the extensive indigenous knowledge of forest ecological services in 3 villages (Katwa, Karudih, and Hesadih) situated in the eastern plateau region of India. One aspect discussed is the indigenous knowledge on the influence of forests on water regimes and water quality.

Optimal Grazing Exclusion Duration to Enhance Soil Carbon Sequestration in Degraded Grasslands

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Across China, grazing exclusion reaches the national mean soil organic carbon recovery benchmark sooner in high‐MAP regions (> 500 mm), but recovery is much slower where MAP < 300 mm. Scaling this strategy to 70% of China's degraded grasslands would sequester about 1.52 Pg of soil carbon over 10 years—roughly 17% of annual global fossil‐fuel emissions.

Using local ecological knowledge to identify shark river habitats in Fiji (South Pacific) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Local ecological knowledge (LEK) and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) have the potential to improve community-based coastal resource management (CBCRM) by providing information about the presence, behaviour and ecology of species.

Review: Insight on Porous Carbon Positive Electrode for Sodium‐Ion Capacitors: Interplay Between Synthesis, Properties, and Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Sodium ion capacitor (SIC) is currently constrained by the low discharge capacity of commercial activated carbon as positive electrode material. This review provides a holistic summary of research efforts on alternative porous carbon materials for SIC. Image created by the authors with www.biorender.com.

Perception-based Methods to Evaluate Conservation Impact in Forests Managed Through Popular Participation

open access: yesEcology and Society, 2010
We reviewed construct validity in perception-based methods assessing status and/or trend of forest condition as applied in 19 empirical studies that evaluated the conservation impact of popular participation in forest management. Perception-based methods
