Measuring size distortions of location quotients

International Economics, 2021
Abstract Location quotients (LQ) are a transformation of raw data stored in contingency tables. This transformation has been used frequently in studies involving international trade (under the name ‘revealed comparative advantage’) and in multiple other settings where a total can be disaggregated under at least two independent criteria and thus ...

Dartboard tests for the location quotient [PDF]

open access: possibleRegional Science and Urban Economics, 2009
Abstract In this paper we reinterpret the location quotient, the commonly employed measure of regional industrial agglomeration, as an estimator derived from Ellison and Glaeser [Ellison, G., and Glaeser, E., 1997. Geographic concentration in U.S. manufacturing industries: a dartboard approach.

On the Location Quotient Confidence Interval [PDF]

open access: yesGeographical Analysis, 2003
The location quotient is a useful tool for comparing area characteristics. It has applications in areas such as health care and economics. Individual location quotient standard deviations play an important role in comparing area characteristics. Using the Delta Method, a closed‐form expression is derived for calculating the standard deviation of the ...

The location quotient as an estimator of industrial concentration

Regional Science and Urban Economics, 2012
Abstract We construct the location quotient (LQ) from a discrete data generating process and formally test its statistical properties. First, we show that the LQ is typically unbiased, but exhibits finite sample bias when assuming a Poisson distribution. Second, we determine the accuracy of statistical tests, which depends of both sample size as well

Focal Location Quotients: Specification and Applications

Geographical Analysis, 2012
Location quotients (LQs) are commonly used descriptive statistics in spatial analysis. They are not directly affected by neighbor relationships, and their calculation ignores spatial information. This article computes LQs as focal, rather than strictly local, functions by incorporating the spatial structure of the observations in the reference group in

Location quotient and trade

The Annals of Regional Science, 2008
Economic base analysis suggests that export expansion should be the primary engine of regional economic growth and the most commonly employed approach to identifying specialization is the location quotient (LQ). Similarly, the law of comparative advantage represents a conceptual framework for determining the type of trade.

Clustering: Spatial Autocorrelation and Location Quotients

2018
Geographic concentration of employment types frequently yields clusters exhibiting moderate-to-strong positive spatial autocorrelation. Such clusters based upon geographic proximity, and frequently quantified with location quotients, also can relate to local indices of spatial autocorrelation, such as LISA and the Getis-Ord statistics.

Mapping of the educational status of Haryana based on location quotient

The National Geographical Journal of India, 2023
India has the world's second-largest educational system. The Indian educational system has seen sig-nificant changes. A lot of work has gone into shaping the current educational system. The announcements included the elimination of mandatory CBSE board examinations for class10th beginning in the 2010-11 school year, and the implementation of a grading ...

Determination of Location Quotient of Organic Agriculture in Türkiye

Tekirdağ Ziraat Fakültesi Dergisi
The main objective of the study is to determine in which provinces organic agriculture is clustered in Türkiye. Location quotient is one of the most widely used indices in regional concentration measurements and expresses the degree of specialization of a certain production activity within a country/region/sector or the relative concentration of a ...
