Self-incompatibility in Lolium perenne L. [PDF]

open access: yesHeredity, 1976
Self-incompatibility in Lolium perenne is shown to be controlled by a complicated multifactorial system with at least three loci. Pollen control is gametophytic. The growth of incompatible pollen tubes is usually inhibited on the stigmatic surface. The incompatibility mechanism does not appear to be particularly strong, since partial self-compatibility

Plant Functional Composition, Ecological Niche Distribution, and Biodiversity Measures Across Urban Grasslands of Different Size, Localisation, and Type

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Urban grasslands (UGs) are among the most abundant type of green infrastructure in cities worldwide. They deliver a range of ecosystem services and perform numerous ecosystem functions. To ensure the multifunctionality of UGs, enhancing their biodiversity is crucial; however, owing to urbanisation effects and inappropriate management, UGs ...

A route to decreasing N pollution from livestock: Use of Festulolium hybrids improves efficiency of N flows in rumen simulation fermenters

open access: yesFood and Energy Security, 2020
Ruminant agriculture suffers from inefficient capture of forage protein and consequential release of N pollutants to land. This is due to proteolysis in the rumen catalyzed by both microbial but initially endogenous plant proteases.

The endophytic symbiont Epichloë festucae establishes an epiphyllous net on the surface of Lolium perenne leaves by development of an expressorium, an appressorium‐like leaf exit structure

open access: yesNew Phytologist, 2016
Summary Epichloë festucae forms a mutualistic symbiotic association with Lolium perenne. This biotrophic fungus systemically colonizes the intercellular spaces of aerial tissues to form an endophytic hyphal network. E. festucae also grows as an epiphyte,
