Long-period gratings (LPGs) in optical fibers for sensing are discussed, especially on strain and temperature sensing. Low-cost fabrication by a low-pressure mercury-lamp exposure was described. LPGs in high-birefringence fiber had high strain sensitivity.

Hermetic sealing of long period fiber gratings

A method of writing long period grating and a model to explain light coupling between fundamental mode and cladding mode are presented. One athermal hermetic sealing approach is proposed to form hermetic sealing long period fiber grating. A long period fiber grating was designed and written for this experiment.

Step-changed long-period fiber gratings

Dipole effect in long-period fiber grating

An effect of dipole by the UV-induced birefringence was analyzed using a long-period fiber grating. It was approximately 5.6% in UV-induced refractive index change due to the photosensitivity of Ge-related glass defects in our experiment.
