Long-period fiber gratings as ultrafast optical differentiators

Optics Letters, 2005
It is demonstrated that a single, uniform long-period fiber grating (LPFG) working in the linear regime inherently behaves as an ultrafast optical temporal differentiator. Specifically, we show that the output temporal waveform in the core mode of a LPFG providing full energy coupling into the cladding mode is proportional to the first derivative of ...

3D printed long period gratings for optical fibers

Optics Letters, 2016
We demonstrate a simple technique for implementing long period grating (LPG) structures by the use of a 3D printer. This Letter shows a way of manipulating the mode coupling within an optical fiber by applying stress through an external 3D printed periodic structure.

Femtosecond-written long-period gratings in fluoride fibers

Optics Letters, 2018
Long-period gratings induced in fluoride glass fibers using femtosecond laser pulses at 800 nm are, to the best of our knowledge, demonstrated for the first time. By means of tightly confined ultrashort laser pulses, smooth periodic lines of refractive index changes are induced along the fiber core.

Structural long-period gratings in photonic crystal fibers

Optics Letters, 2002
We report what is believed to be the first example of structural long-period gratings written in pure silica photonic crystal fibers (PCFs). The gratings are realized by periodic collapse of the holes of the PCF by heat treatment with a CO(2) laser. The resulting periodic hole-size perturbation produces core-to-cladding-mode conversion.

Long Period Fiber Gratings Inscribed by Periodically Tapering a Fiber

IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 2014
A promising technique for inscribing long period fiber gratings (LPFGs) was demonstrated by only using a commercial splicer. The commercial splicer was developed secondarily to build up a new program for periodically tapering a single mode fiber. High-quality LPFGs with a low insertion loss of ~1 dB and a large resonant attenuation of more than -30 dB ...

Random period arc-induced long-period fiber gratings

Optics & Laser Technology, 2012
Abstract We report the fabrication of arc-induced long-period fiber gratings with strong random variations in the period. Long-period fiber gratings with standard deviations in the period from 8.50 to 36.98 μm were fabricated. The spectral position of the resonant bands is determined by the average period value, being similar to that observed in a ...

Progress in long period fiber gratings

Conference Proceedings. LEOS'98. 11th Annual Meeting. IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society 1998 Annual Meeting (Cat. No.98CH36243), 2002
Summary form only given. Long period fiber gratings have been used in a variety of applications such as gain equalization filters for optical amplifiers, band rejection filters and sensors for temperature and strain. Among these applications, gain equalization is the most demanding and interesting because of the impact of broadband gain-flattened EDFA ...

Dipole effect in long-period fiber grating

Bragg Gratings, Photosensitivity, and Poling in Glass Waveguides, 2001
An effect of dipole by the UV-induced birefringence was analyzed using a long-period fiber grating. It was approximately 5.6% in UV-induced refractive index change due to the photosensitivity of Ge-related glass defects in our experiment.

Asymmetric microhole-structured long-period fiber gratings

Sensors and Actuators B: Chemical, 2011
Abstract Asymmetric microhole-structured long period fiber grating fabricated in single mode, fiber and photonics crystal fiber by use of femtosecond laser pulse drilling is, presented. The periodically structured microholes positioned a few microns away, from the central fiber axis can effectively couple the fundamental core mode into the, forward ...

Novel tunable long-period fiber grating filters

SPIE Proceedings, 2004
A novel method to mechanically induce a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) by a grooved plate is reported. The transmission spectra of this kind of grating under different pressures and some special LPFG’s are experimentally investigated. This method is simple and reconfigurable and offers large spectra tunability.
