ABSTRACT Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) can deliver unparalleled performance for future neuromorphic computing applications. Such neuromorphic PICs require a large number of tunable switches, which are typically realized with current‐controlled heaters, resulting in considerable energy consumption.

Composite material process monitoring using optical fibre grating sensors [PDF]
In this thesis a long period grating (LPG) based sensor is investigated as a possible alternative to current process monitoring sensors used in the manufacture of composites to monitor cure. An LPG is demonstrated as a means of monitoring the cure of a

A polarisation maintaining fibre Bragg grating interrogation system for multi- axis strain sensing [PDF]
Fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) written into polarisation maintaining (PM) fibres have been employed for multi-axis strain and temperature sensing. In this paper we report the development of a FBG interrogation system that is capable of detecting ...

Thermo‐Derived Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Elastomer Pattern with Composite Structural Colors
A thermochromic cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) oligomer was synthesized for the preparation of CLC elastomer (CLCE) films with dual reflection bands. Subsequently, a CLCE pattern with composite structural colors was prepared, which was suitably applied for decoration and anti‐counterfeiting.

Analysis of Polyimide-Coated Optical Fiber Long-Period Grating-Based Relative Humidity Sensor
A long-period grating (LPG)-based relative humidity (RH) sensor is developed, based on using a tailored layered polyimide coating on the grating region at the distal end of the fiber probe and allowing it to respond to humidity changes.

High-Order Modes Micro-Knot Excited by a Long-Period Fiber Grating
We suggest a fiber micro-knot fabricated on a long-period fiber grating. The long-period fiber grating excites high-order modes into the micro-knot and transfers the output back to the Gaussian mode.

Small period long period grating with enhanced sensitivity in low refractive index region
Long period grating with a grating period of 15 μm is fabricated with a femtosecond laser. Such a small period grating enables coupling of fundamental core mode with high order cladding modes that have effective refractive index close to water, and ...
