A Modified Long Short-Term Memory Cell

International Journal of Neural Systems, 2023
Machine Learning (ML), among other things, facilitates Text Classification, the task of assigning classes to textual items. Classification performance in ML has been significantly improved due to recent developments, including the rise of Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Gated Recurrent Units (GRUs), and Transformer ...

Separate mechanisms for short- and long-term memory

Behavioural Brain Research, 1999
It has been assumed for over a century that short-term memory (STM) processes are in charge of cognition while long-term memory (LTM) is being formed, a process that takes hours. A major question is whether STM is merely a step towards LTM, or a separate entity.

A review on the long short-term memory model

Artificial Intelligence Review, 2020
Long short-term memory (LSTM) has transformed both machine learning and neurocomputing fields. According to several online sources, this model has improved Google’s speech recognition, greatly improved machine translations on Google Translate, and the answers of Amazon’s Alexa.

Immediate Memory for Faces: Long- or Short-Term Memory?

Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1973
Immediate recognition memory span and short-term forgetting for non-verbal stimuli (“unfamiliar faces”) were investigated in normal subjects and amnesic patients. Surnames were used as a verbal control. It was found that normal subjects had a reliable immediate recognition span of one for faces and that there was no decrement in performance in the ...

Long short-term memory with activation on gradient

Neural Networks, 2023
As the number of long short-term memory (LSTM) layers increases, vanishing/exploding gradient problems exacerbate and have a negative impact on the performance of the LSTM. In addition, the ill-conditioned problem occurs in the training process of LSTM and adversely affects its convergence.

Effect of corticosteroids on short-term and long-term memory

Neurology, 2005
The effect of acute high-dose glucocorticoid therapy on memory function in patients with acute optic neuritis (n = 9) and multiple sclerosis (n = 21) was studied. All patients had reversible impairment of long-term memory functions, whereas measures of short-term memory, attentional functions, and alertness remained unaffected.

Short‐term and long‐term memory in single cells

The FASEB Journal, 1991
Many approaches have been used to study short‐ and long‐term memory. Bacteria detect chemical gradients using a memory obtained by the combination of a fast excitation process and a slow adaptation process. This model system, which has the advantages of extensive genetic and biochemical information, shows no features of long‐term ...

The long and the short of long–term memory—a molecular framework

Nature, 1986
A single learning event initiates several memory processes with different time courses of retention. While short term memory involves covalent modification of pre-existing proteins, the finding that long-term memory requires the expression, during learning, of additional genes, makes it possible to analyse in molecular terms the induction and retention

Short-Term Memory to Long-Term Memory Transition in a Nanoscale Memristor

ACS Nano, 2011
"Memory" is an essential building block in learning and decision-making in biological systems. Unlike modern semiconductor memory devices, needless to say, human memory is by no means eternal. Yet, forgetfulness is not always a disadvantage since it releases memory storage for more important or more frequently accessed pieces of information and is ...
