Data compression using long common strings

Proceedings DCC'99 Data Compression Conference (Cat. No. PR00096), 1999
We describe a precompression algorithm that effectively represents any long common strings that appear in a file. The algorithm interacts well with standard compression algorithms that represent shorter strings that are near in the input text. Our experiments show that some real data sets do indeed contain many long common strings.

Robot strings: Long, thin continuum robots

2013 IEEE Aerospace Conference, 2013
We describe and discuss the development of long, thin, continuous “string-like” robots aimed at Space exploration missions. These continuous backbone “continuum” robots are inspired by numerous biological structures, particularly vines, worms, and the tongues of animals such as the anteater.

The long string as a field probe

IEEE Antennas and Propagation Magazine, 2005
We show how a long string can be used to probe the incident field across the target zone of a radar cross section (RCS) test range. The string may be stretched horizontally from wall to wall, or vertically from floor to ceiling. One end of the string is fixed and the other end is moved by an actuator mounted in the wall or ceiling. The resulting motion

Heave response of long riserless drill strings

Ocean Engineering, 1988
Abstract The sensitivity of heave response predictions for long riserless drill strings hanging from a floating vessel are examined. A general analytical procedure is presented which is suitable for a variety of deepwater pipe systems. The dynamic response behavior is characterized in terms of the dynamic magnification, phase angle and total stress ...

Interacting waves in long stretched elastic strings

Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, 1970
Abstract This paper illustrates some of the interactions between extensional and deflectional waves in a nonlinearly elastic string. An iterative approximation is developed for small disturbances passing through, and being scattered by, a deflectional signal of arbitrary amplitude.

How Long Is a Piece of String?

International Commerce Review, 2010
The definition of what it means to be ‘responsible’ or ‘sustainable’ is always changing. Today, the main focus is on sustainable, responsible supply chains. But the corporate social responsibility (CSR) agenda may be on the move again. How responsible is your company’s investment strategy?

How Long is a Piece of String?

The Mathematical Gazette, 1968
The length of a piece of string is of course given by a real number. While this is a complete answer to the question posed, it is amusing to consider the converse problem of constructing a piece of string whose length (in terms of an appropriate unit) is a given real number and, further, to consider which real numbers can be constructed in this way.

Predicting Motions Of Long Towed Pipe String

Offshore Technology Conference, 1984
ABSTRACT A technique for predicting the motions during maneuvering of long towed pipe strings is presented. The numerical procedure is validated by comparing numerical results with closed form solutions. Scale model experiments demonstrate the ability of the mathematical model to simulate the maneuvering of such ...
