Nonlinear Longitudinal Vibrations of a Rod

JVC/Journal of Vibration and Control, 1999
This paper deals with the longitudinal vibrations of a nonlinear rod. The nonlinearity is strong and of cubic type. The motion of the rod is described by a second-order strong nonlinear partial differential equation. The exact numerical solution is obtained.

Perception of longitudinal components in piano string vibrations

Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2010
This paper investigates the audibility of longitudinal components in piano string vibrations with listening tests. The recorded fortissimo sounds of two grand and one upright pianos have been resynthesized with and without longitudinal components and used in ABX type listening tests.

Coupled longitudinal and transverse vibrations of tensioned Euler-Bernoulli beams with general linear boundary conditions

open access: yesMechanical Systems and Signal Processing, 2021
The paper concerns coupling between longitudinal and transverse vibrations of tensioned Euler-Bernoulli beams with general linear boundary conditions of arbitrary elastic stiffness.

Transverse vibrations induced by longitudinal excitation in beams with geometrical and loading imperfections

open access: yesJournal of Sound and Vibration, 2019
With structural health monitoring techniques based on measuring transverse vibrations of beam-like components it can be difficult to provide transverse excitation, while longitudinal excitation can be easier.

Longitudinal vibrations of the relativistic string

Physical Review D, 1978
The question of the existence of longitudinal solutions to the massless relativistic string is addressed. In one space and one time dimension, M/sub 1//sub +/1, the classical string solutions are obtained by explicit construction in terms of step functions. No classical solutions exist with only a finite number of modes.

Longitudinal Vibrations of Piezoceramic Rods

Journal of Mathematical Sciences, 2001
The problem of dynamical electroelasticity for the infinite rod (plane problem) is considered. At two cross-sections of the rod there are electrodes which excite pulses varying in time. The aim of the paper is to determine taking off electric energy generated by longitudinal compressed pulse passing through the part between electrodes.

Ultrasonic rock sampling using longitudinal–torsional vibrations

open access: yesUltrasonics, 2010
In recent years several European and US space projects have been focused on the development of surface rovers for planetary missions, such as ExoMars and Mars Exploration Rovers.
