Bycatch of sharks in Korean tuna longline fishery

open access: yesJournal of the Korean Society of Fisheries Technology, 2007
Data collected by on-board observers and from experimental surveys during 2004-2006 were analyzed to figure out the status of shark bycatch in Korean tuna longline fishery. Results obtained from 10 surveys indicated that 14, 13 and 1 species of shark were incidentally caught in Korean tuna longline fishery operated in the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic ...

Measuring Productivity in a Shared Stock Fishery: A Case Study of the Hawaii Longline Fishery

open access: yesMarine Policy, 2015
Abstract Fisheries productivity is the result of many factors, including endogenous and exogenous elements, such as regulation and stock condition. Understanding changes in productivity and the factors affecting that change is important to fishery management and a sustainable fishing industry.

Shark interactions in pelagic longline fisheries

Marine Policy, 2008
Substantial ecological, economic and social problems result from shark interactions in pelagic longline fisheries. Improved understanding of industry attitudes and practices towards shark interactions assists with managing these problems. Information on fisher knowledge and new strategies for shark avoidance may benefit sharks and fishers.

Elasmobranch captures in the Fijian pelagic longline fishery

Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, 2016
Abstract Pelagic longline fisheries for relatively fecund tuna and tuna‐like species can have large adverse effects on incidentally caught species with low‐fecundity, including elasmobranchs. Analyses of observer programme data from the Fiji longline fishery from 2011 to 2014 were conducted to characterize the shark and ray catch composition and ...

Revenue Targeting in Fisheries: The Case of Hawaii Longline Fishery [PDF]

open access: possible, 2009
We apply the target revenue model, a version of prospect theory, to investigate how fishermen adjust their trip length to changes in daily revenue. The key finding is that certain groups of fishermen seem more likely to behave according to the target revenue model rather than the standard model of labor supply.

False killer whales and Hawaii’s longline fisheries.

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2011
False killer whales have been implicated in depredation, or removal of catch or bait, from pelagic longline fisheries throughout the Indo-Pacific. These interactions often result in significant financial loss to the fishing industry, and though uncommon, hooking, or entanglement of false killer whales during depredation often leads to death or serious ...

Selectivity Studies In The Northwest Atlantic Longline Fishery

2000
No abstracts are to be cited without prior reference to the author.Discards are a significant component of catch in the Northwest Atlantic bottom longline fishery. Because the survival of bycatch is often low, reduction of sublegal bycatch in the bottom set longline fishery for Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) is important to the stock rebuilding efforts ...
