International labor migrants: longline tuna fishing in the Pacific Ocean
Asian Anthropology, 2021International labor migrants have been widely studied, particularly on land. However, this anthropological research aims to shed light on the working and living conditions of labor migrants at sea,...

A comparison of methods to spatially represent pelagic longline fishing effort in catch and bycatch studies [PDF]
Bycatch in fisheries has been recognized as a threat to many endangered populations of sea turtles, sea birds and marine mammals. Interactions between pelagic longline fisheries and critically endangered populations of leatherback sea turtles ...

Fishing experiments with an alternative longline bait using surplus fish products
Fisheries Research, 1991Abstract An alternative longline bait based on minced raw materials as feeding stimulants and nylon bag as reinforcement was tested in fishing trials for torsk ( Brosme brosme ), ling ( Molva molva ), cod ( Gadus morhua ) and haddock ( Melanogrammus aeglefinus ).

Color effects of lures on the hooking rates of mackerel longline fishing
Fisheries Science, 2001SUMMARY: This study attempts to understand the color effects of artificial lures on the hooking rate of mackerel longline fisheries in Taiwan waters. From the results obtained from field work, the order of hooking rates from the different colored lures was red > black > yellow-green > yellow-orange = reddish orange = pink > white > blue > purple ...

Fish mouth dimensions and size selectivity in a Portuguese longline fishery
Journal of Applied Ichthyology, 1997The relationship between fish total length (TL) and mouth size in six species was investigated in light of the implications for the modelling of size selectivity of hooks. Significant non-linear relationships were found in three species, suggesting that optimal size at capture is not a linear function of hook size.

Reviews in Fish Biology and Fisheries, 2008
I quantify the effects of 11 variables on the catchability and fishing power of pelagic longlines, which are used to catch tunas and billfishes in the open ocean. Extension of the depth range and the duration of longline operations have reduced the catchability of several epipelagic species, such as mako sharks (Isurus spp.), since industrial ...

Echolocation detection of fishing hooks and implications for the Hawaiian longline fishery
Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2016Interactions between marine mammals and fisheries have a biological and economic impact that is often detrimental to both fishermen and species of concern. False killer whale bycatch in the Hawaii longline fishery has exceeded the potential biological removal (PBR) triggering the designation of a take reduction team under the Marine Mammal Protection ...

Norwegian Experience of Deep-Water Fishing with Longlines
1995Experimental fishing with long lines for deep-water fish was carried out in four areas of the North Atlantic by staff of the Directorate of Fisheries, Bergen. These were off North Norway in 1990, west of the British Isles and along the Reykjanes Ridge in 1991 and frnally on Hatton Bank in 1992.
